Our plans for the future
One of these days we hope to be able to stop work, build a second boat and sail away into the world.
Never stop dreaming! We are now one step closer to this goal as we have decided to build a boat which could be used for such a undertaking.
This page:
This page will be filled with our thoughts on the boat we hope to build and the way of living we want. We know we need at least 5 years from now till the boat is ready to sail but this could easily be longer as we both have demanding jobs. We are interested in feedback so if you are interested or if you have some kind of feedback, please send an

The boat, first thoughts
We want a boat spacious enough for a family with two kids (
we have 1 since 12sep97, a second one seems logical). Other, not very original, requirements: Large galley, large navigation area, central place for a solid fuel heater and engine easily reachable. We also want decent insulation as we also want to visit the colder area's in this world.
We haven't chosen a design yet but a 11 meter long sharpie with two masts and Junk sails is what we have in mind. We will build the hull with ply/epoxy/glas.
Financial limits, where to save money
We are not rich, so we have to save wherever possible. What we want is a safe, easy to repair, high quality boat. We do not need luxury and we do not need a glossy finish. So here some of the area's where we think we can save.
- We will build ourselves. Our time is free.
- To be able to buy cheaply we will start an association so that we can buy in the same places where the professionals buy.
- The boat will not have a glossy finish, quality of the building materials is more important.
- The engine will be an outboard engine in a well. Cheap and much easier to repair than the usually hard to reach diesel engine.
- We will get rid of all holes in the hull. We will use "standpipes" instead. This is more reliable and saves money by not needing expensive brass hardware.
- We will also save money by the rig we have chosen, a "Junk rig". This we can build ourselves,
including the masts.
- We will limit the electrical system. Power will be generated by two 60w solar panels and a wind generator. This should be enough for the navigational and interior lights and it should make it possible to charge small batteries for a radio, a laptop computer etc. In case the batteries are empty, we will use oil lamps. The engine will be hand start, so the batteries can be heavy duty deep cycle. These are more expensive but last much longer.
- We will limit the number of winches on board to two. These will be large self tailing and can be used for al kind of important things like ketching and to get the anchor up if it is stuck.
- We will not save on anchors for obvious reasons. We plan to buy 1 Luke Fisherman, 2 CQRs, 1 Bruce and 1 Danfort.
