I realize this page isn't particularly impressive, but I finally consider myself "moved in" to this little corner of the web.
My name is Beth Winters. In May of 1997 I graduated from Cornell University
in Ithaca, New York, and after a "final" summer at camp (never say never), moved to Iowa, where the scenery is quite different. Now I find myself clarifying that I went to Cornell University, not the smaller (and nearer) Cornell College.
While at Cornell, I had a great time playing cymbals in the Big Red
Marching Band, and sometimes I branched out to play other percussion instruments in the (small red?) pep band. 
It was really a great time, and I find myself missing those crazy bands (and NCAA div I hockey!) from time to time.
Then I moved 1200 miles west to attend grad school at Iowa State University in Ames, studying plant physiology/molecular biology in the new department of Genetics, Development, and Cell Biology.
I started out looking for a root-preferential promoter in soybean, spent a lot of time studying the enzyme ATP citrate lyase, mainly in Arabidopsis , and finally did some analysis of the bio1 mutant. It was a long strange trip from one project to the other, and some day I will tell the story, when thinking about it doesn't make me so tired...
Now I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, working on soybeans again in the Plant Transformation Core Facility.

Does anyone else see the pattern of schools where everyone is wearing RED sweatshirts on game days? Perhaps this is how I will choose my next location...
I've been a Girl Scout for quite a while now, since first
grade!
I enjoy camping and playing outside in various forms. I love rocks and trees and mountains and rivers all sorts of being outside. 
I will always be partial to one Girl Scout camp in the northeast
corner of Pennsylvania which I attended as a camper and then graduated to
staff, spending 13 summers there in the process. The name is Hidden
Valley, and even my mother thinks she's
lost the road on her way up, but I will always love the place and the people
and the house at the end of the Deer Trails road almost to PA-191.
Unfortunately for future Rolling Hills Girl Scouts, HVC has now been sold. I can not express in words how sad that makes me.
I'm not sure when I will be able to return to camp, but I think after so many summers in the woods there's no way I can stay away forever. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what life has in store.
In my "spare" time I do some volunteering for Destination Imagination... in Iowa and Nebraska at the moment.
I am a member of the the Wilderness Society (though they are ticking me off recently by demanding that I pay membership dues *3* times this year!) and the Nature Conservancy. Their philosophy of buying the land to preserve it for future generations strikes me as the right way to go. I often say that when I win the lottery I will buy Hidden Valley Camp back...

I haven't updated my "photos" page in years, and there is still a pile of stuff somewhere that I want to scan... Now that I have a digital camera maybe I'll get better at posting photos. Then again, maybe I won't... Maybe I will find a way to link here to my online photo albums, but so far I have not looked into how to do that.
I'll still be playing around here occasionally when I feel particularly inspired or am looking for a way to procrastinate, so feel free to send suggestions.
