QUAIL - Bobwhite and Scaled

DATES AND OPEN AREAS: November 1, 1997 - January 31, 1998; statewide

BAG LIMIT:
 10 daily, 20 in possession after first day. Quail harvested during a controlled quail hunt must be included in the daily statewide bag limit.

HUNTING HOURS:
 Official sunrise to official sunset. (see table)


PHEASANT - Panhandle Counties

DATES AND OPEN AREAS: December 1, 1997 - January 1, 1998; Beaver, Texas, and Cimarron counties.

BAG LIMIT:
 Cocks only - 3 daily, 6 in possession after first day, 9 in possession after second day. Persons who hunt in two states having separate daily bag limits may not exceed the largest number of birds that can legally be taken in one of the states in which they take birds.

HUNTING HOURS:
 7:30am to 5:30pm

IDENTIFICATION:
Evidence of sex (head or one foot) must remain on the bird until it has reached final destination.


PHEASANT - Northwest

DATES AND OPEN AREAS: Concurrent with quail season (Nov. 1, 1997 - Jan. 31, 1998). Alfalfa, that part of Garfield County north of Hwy. 412, Grant, Harper, Kay, that part of Major county north of Hwy.412, that part of Noble County north of Hwy. 412, Woods and Woodward counties, and that portion of Ellis County north of Hwy. 51.

BAG LIMIT:
 Cocks only - 1 daily, 2 in possession after first day. Persons who hunt in two states having separate daily bag limits may not exceed the largest number of birds hat can legally be taken in one of the states in which they take birds.

HUNTING HOURS:

PRAIRIE CHICKEN - Greater and Lesser

DATES: Gun: October 18 & 19, 1997; Archery: December 1-31, 1997.

 OPEN AREAS: Beaver, Craig, Ellis, Harper, Kay, Mayes, that part of Noble east of I-35 and North of US 64, Nowata, Osage, Ottawa, that part of Pawnee north of US 64 and west of SH 18, Rogers, that part of Texas County north of SH 3 and east of SH 94 and SH 54, Wagoner, Washington and Woodward counties.

BAG LIMIT:
 1 daily, 2 in possession after first day.

HUNTING HOURS:
 Daylight to dark.


WILD TURKEY - Fall 1997

SEASON LIMIT: One turkey per hunter, regardless of method of taking.

DATES: Gun: November 1 - November 21, 1997; Archery: October 6 - November 21, 1997, and December 1 - December 31, 1997.

OPEN AREAS AND BAG LIMIT (ARCHERY): One turkey of either sex; statewide

OPEN AREAS AND BAG LIMIT (GUN): The following counties have a bag limit of one (1) tom turkey: Alfalfa, Caddo, Canadian, Carter, Cimarron, Cotton, Creek, Custer, Garfield, Grady, Grant, Greer, Harmon, Haskell, Hughes, Jefferson, Kiowa, Love, McIntosh, Murray, Muskogee, Noble, Okfuskee, Pawnee, Seminole, Sequoyah, Stephens, Texas, and Washita.

 The following counties have a bag limit of one (1) turkey of either sex: Beaver, Beckham, Blaine, Comanche, Dewey, Ellis, Harper, Jackson, Kingfisher, Logan, Major, Osage, Payne, Roger Mills, Tillman, Woods, and Woodward. The fall gun turkey season is closed in all areas not listed above. See map.


WILD TURKEY - Spring 1998
 (except Southeast Region)

DATES: April 6 - May 6, 1998

OPEN AREAS AND BAG LIMITS: The following counties have a bag limit of one (1) tom turkey: Adair, Bryan, Caddo, Canadian, Carter, Cherokee, Cimarron, Cleveland, Craig, Custer, Delaware, Garfield, Garvin, Grady, Haskell, Hughes, Johnston, Kay, Kiowa, Lincoln, McClain, McIntosh, Marshall, Mayes, Murray, Muskogee, Noble, Nowata, Oklahoma, Okmulgee, Ottawa, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie, Rogers, Seminole, Sequoyah, Stephens, Texas, Tulsa, Wagoner, Washington, and Washita.

 The following counties have a bag limit of two (2) tom turkeys: Alfalfa, Beaver, Beckham, Blaine, Comanche, Cotton, Creek, Dewey, Ellis, Grant, Greer, Harmon, Harper, Jackson, Jefferson, Kingfisher, Logan, Love, Major, Okfuskee, Osage, Pawnee, Payne, Roger Mills, Tillman, Woods, and Woodward.

DAILY, SEASON AND POSSESSION LIMIT: Season bag limit of three tom turkeys. No more than one tom may be taken in one day. No more than one tom may be taken in any county with a one tom bag limit and no more than two toms may be taken in any county with a two tom bag limit. No more than one bird may be taken from the combined eight counties in the southeast region.


WILD TURKEY - Spring 1998
 (Southeast Region)

DATES: April 16 - May 1, 1998

OPEN AREAS: Atoka, Choctaw, Coal, Latimer, Leflore, McCurtain, Pittsburg, and Pushmataha.

TOTAL SEASON AND POSSESSION LIMIT: The total season bag limit is one tom turkey to the combined southeast region counties listed above.


GENERAL REGULATIONS FOR WILD TURKEY

TOM TURKEY DEFINITION:  Any bearded turkey, regardless of sex.

HUNTING HOURS:  One-half hour before official sunrise to official sunset.  (see table)

BAITING: Turkeys may not be hunted or taken within 100 yards of any bait.  "Bait" shall mean the placing exposing, depositing, distributing or scattering of shelled, shucked or unshucked corn, wheat, or other grain or other feed so as to constitute for such birds a lure, attraction or enticement, on or over any area where hunters are attempting to take them.  The taking of wild turkey over standing crops, grain crops, properly shucked on the field where grown or grain found scattered solely as the result of normal agricultural operations is permitted.

Roost shooting is prohibited.

DECOYS AND RECORDED CALLS:  Hunting turkey with artificial decoys is permitted. Live decoys and recorded calls are prohibited.

TAGGING:  Upon harvesting a turkey, all annual license/permit holders will be required to complete the Record of Game section on the back of the license form.  All persons, including lifetime license holders, taking a turkey must immediately upon harvesting a bird securely attach their name and hunting license number to either leg of the harvested bird.  Evidence of sex (one leg with foot), must remain on the bird until it has reached final destination.  Beards on hens must remain intact until the bird has reached final destinations.  A separate permit is required of reach bird that is hunted.  Hunters who possess resident lifetime hunting or resident lifetime combination licenses are exempt from the purchase of permits, but are required to attach their name and hunting license number to any turkeys they harvest.

REPORTING:  All hunters taking a turkey must check their bird at the nearest hunter check station or with an authorized Department employee.
