The marraige took place at the residence of Mrs. Binda Crank. (Notes: John M., father of the bride, died March 11 of that same year; Lucinda was not listed in the 1870 census, so her birth would have been between June 23 and Oct 1, 1870 since her age is recorded as 16 at the time she was married.)

• Elizabeth Crank Harmon, age 20, married Joseph Caldwell on December 23, 1888. Her parents are listed as John M. and Binda Wallace Crank. The marraige took place at the bride's residence. (Notes: This appears to be Elizabeth's second marraige, the first to a man anmed Harmon; her age matches the child "Betty" in the 1870 census; and John M. has been dead over two years at this time.)

I don't know of any connection between my ancestors and the Crank's of Illinois, yet. I have been able to trace my kin back to Tennessee in the 1800's and Virginia in the mid 1700's (my 4th great-grandfather was Lipscomb Crank b VA abt 1765). My information is in genealogy software and I haven't figured out how to extract individual reports for the Internet. I have some printouts of descendants which I will be glad to send by snail mail if you will send me your address. There are a couple of places on the net where I have found information. You may have already looked at them but here they are anyway; http://www.citynet.net/ mostwanted/cpcz.html and http://www.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/Genea/rsisearch .pl. There is a Robert K. Crank, P.O. Box 936, Venice, Fl, 34284 who has quite a bit of data on the Crank clan. He has some 800 pages of data back as far as Thomas Cranke in Virginia abt 1650. I have some information on a John Crank (Cranch) (no documented relation) b abt 1731 in Pennsylvania and one of his descendants was a Mary J. Crank b 1837 in Ohio. Her siblings are buried in Jefferson Co. Indiana. If any of this sounds interesting, let me know and I will send it.

I was very interested in your search for your family roots and have some information you may find useful. A Samuel D. Crank was born in 1808 in KY to parents James Crank and Eleanor (or Ellender) Taylor (related to President Zachary Taylor.) His siblings were David Crockett Crank, Garrett Crank, John Crank, Mary "Polly" Crank Stewart, Cornelius Crank (my great great great grandfather,) Preston Crank, Amanda Crank Stewart, Martha Patsy Crank Combs, Elizabeth Crank Dickerson, William Crank and Ellen Crank Fortney.

There was also a Samuel B. Crank, but he was born in 1828 in KY to Cornelius Crank and Phebe Laws. His sibs were Sarah (Sally), James, Thomas(my great great grandfather,) Cornelius Jr., William, Eleanor (Nellie), John, Mary Jane, Mildred, Elizabeth and Milton. My Crank ancestors have been traced back to circa 1675, when Thomas Crank Sr. (born in England) inherited land in Lancaster or Middlesex Co. Virginia from a Henry Nichols.

You might also be interested to know that there is a Crank Hall (passed out of Crank hands in 1680) in the hamlet of Crank, Lancashire, England.

My family name started in West Virginia near the first of this century. It came about because my great grandfather was found as an abandoned child at the crank of the well. He was so named and was not given the name of the adoptive family. This was in Jackson County, WV near Sissonville. There are some of my family in Jackson County and I was raised in Mason County, WV. I was at the Univ. of Illinois for a while and can tell you that I share my name with Dr. David Crank, a veterinarian somewhere near Rantoul, IL.

The Name Crank comes from what the Bureau ofIndian Affairs gave my great-grandfather "Huskenenie" in literal translation it means "He who passes on harsh wisdom". Now this may have been not the information you might be looking for, but if so, I am really curious as to how you might be related to me. Heh, but I really doubt it!

I am currently the geneaology point of contact for our family. I haven't visited your web page but my brother informs me that there are plenty of the same names as there are in our geneaology. The times and locations aren't the same but they could be related. Another of my relatives has been in contact with one other line of Cranks here in the states. Our line goes back to a William Crank in Virginia probably born around 1750. The other Crank line comes back to Virginia and goes back further than ours. Its possible that we are from the same WIlliam Crank that was sentenced by an English court to be exiled to the colonies, in 1710 (I think I don't have my papers here at the office). Best bet for research is to try to make the leap back to Virginia. Lots of different Cranks in Virginia.

I'll visit your page with my papers handy and see If I find any connections.
