Research activity:

1987: 40-day stay as volunteer assistant at USDA-ARS Appalachian Fruit Research Station of Kearneysville, West Virginia, USA (referent: dr. D.L. Peterson). Research activity concerned stone- (peach), pip- (apple) and small- (brambles) fruit harvester prototype experimentation, as well as post-harvest fruit quality analyses.
1989-92: BS thesis on maize in vitro cultures (transl. title: Recurrent selection for regeneration capacity from calli of maize) at Istituto di Agronomia e Colture Erbacee, University of Bologna, Italy (tutors: prof. P. Landi and prof. R. Tuberosa).
1992: preliminary survey at Dipartimento di Colture Arboree, University of Bologna, Italy on agronomic performance of new European and Japanese plum cultivars in the Po Valley and in central Italy. Research activity also concerned fruit quality analyses.
1993: six-month stage at INRA Station of Angers (France) on protoplast technology.
1994: INRA "Pre-Doc" grant at INRA Station of Angers on protoplast technology.
1995-97: INRA PhD thesis on flavonoid metabolism in Forsythia (tutor: Mr. M. Duron).
1995: 10-day stay at INRA Station of Avignon-Montfavet, France (referent: dr. M.-J- Amiot) on HPLC analyses of flavonoids.
1996: 20-day stay at University of Munich at Freising-Weihenstephan, Germany (referent: prof. G. Forkmann) on enzymatic analyses of flavonoids.
1998-99: Post-Doc at ENEA Casaccia, Rome, Italy (referent: prof. G. Giuliano) on molecular biology (gene cloning, gene expression analyses, genetic transformation) of carotenoid pathway of tomato and arabidopsis.
1999-2001: 2.5-year contract at ISF (Experimental Fruit Tree Breeding Station) Forlì, Italy (referent: Dr. W. Faedi) on fruit (apple, pear and strawberry) breeding and research on alternative methods to the use of methyl bromide (POM project).
