JANUARY CHAPTER MEETING
Tuesday, January 7th at the Cornelia Public Library at 7:00 pm. Don't miss it!!
LEGISLATURE TIME
It's about that time of year again!
I was returning home from a week in Florida yesterday and heard an interview
with one of the Georgia state senators. They were discussing the legislative
process and the importance of citizens' input regarding pending legislation. She
said that, even on the biggest issues, it is rare to receive comments from more
than about five or six of her constituents...on less popular issues, it is not
unusual for legislators to receive no such comments. Except from professional
lobbyists. They always make their wishes known, that's their job.
So, when there is an issue before the legislature that affects something near and
dear to our hearts - say, the environment - it is important that we make our
concerns known to the legislators. If we don't do it, the only input will be from
the lobbyists. And we all know what the results could be.
I know a lot of us do make our opinions known on certain critical legislation, but
for those who don't, please consider doing so - you may make a bigger
difference than you thought possible.
OUTDOOR CLASSROOM UPDATE
As you folks may remember, the Georgia Power Foundation committed $1,500 to us in 1996 for
the Outdoor Classroom. One of the restrictions was that we provide receipts for the expenses
for which the funds were used before they would reimburse us. We recently submitted receipts
to them for restroom construction expenses in the amount of $1,999, and in their generosity, fully
reimbursed for this amount rather than the original committment.
Also, the Georgia Council has nominated the Outdoor Classroom for the Georgia Wildlife
Federation's Conservation Education Project of the year. This will give us some additional
exposure to the public on a wider scale.
Both of these items show that many people besides those of us in the Georgia Foothills chapter
view the classroom as a worthwhile project. Congratulations and thank you to everyone who has
given of their time and resources to work on this project.
Hopefully, with the coming of Spring, the classroom will be put to good use by the teachers of
our community.
RABUN RENDEVOUS
Well, it's that time of year again....time for the big shin-dig our neighbors to the north throw every year, the
famous (infamous?) Rabun Rendevous!
When: Saturday, January 18, 1997
Where: Henry's Playhouse at the Dillard House complex in Dillard, GA
Social: 5:00 to 6:30 including music, bucket raffles, silent auction, snacks, and soft drinks.
Dinner: 6:30 - if you leave hungry, it's your own fault.
Program: Lonice Barrett, Chairman of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources
Cost: $15 adults, $10 for young 'uns under 6
Miscellaneous: No reservations this year at the Rendevous - first come, first served...if you're late you

Please bring a really neat item for the raffle, silent auction or door prizes to help support the Rabun
chapter.

HELP WANTED
You may have noticed the newsletter is getting a bit thin of late. You could help out by writing up
an article, fishing tip, trip report, fly pattern, etc. We'd all appreciate hearing from some of our
"unpublished" members.
Write it up and send it to the editor...chances are, your article will show up in the near future.
Thanks!
