There's a new album in the works! Don Cab (sans Jeff Ellsworth) are returning to Rust Belt Studios in Michigan with longtime engineer/producer Al Sutton to record their new album. Tentatively titled "Punkgasm", some of the working song titles include: "Slaughbaughs Ought Not Own Dog Data", "Aw Man, That's Jive Skip", and "Bulkeye". Punkgasm will see a late summer release via Relapse. Damon claims it will be the "the "best Caballero yet". Watch the forums and their MySpace page for up-to-the-minute details as the summer rolls on.

Apparently the Sludgehammer EP will be of unreleased material recorded in '91 and the Don Cab single will be with the new lineup.

The news that you have either been waiting for or hoping would never happen has arrived: Don Caballero are reforming, but with different members. They will be playing a free show in Pittsburgh in September, but apparently that's where the reunion will end too.

April 16th 2003
I got to see Battles last night at the Middle East, and I was quite impressed! Ian was playing both guitar and keyboards, Ty Braxton was doing a similar thing, Dave from Lynx was on another guitar and John Stanier was beating the living crap out of his drums (as he always does, and he always sounds great. Oh - and he had his crash cymbal about 7 feet high, I kid you not).
So I kinda forgot my camera (doh!), so sorry about that. However, there were plenty of people taking pictures there and I could also see a mike being held high in the crowd during the show, so if you're one of those people and you're feeling generous, you could send me your gear and I'll try to host it here.
They sounded very together - the description I've been using is a cross between late Don Caballero, the meaty parts of Trans Am and with some of the electronics that you'd find at a Pan Sonic gig. It actually meshed quite well, IMO mostly because of Stanier's insane drum machine-like skin smashings. There were loops, bleeps, and even some vocoder-induced human beats from Ty Braxton. Highly recommended - do check them out if you can. I'm looking forward to some recorded material next...
April 3rd 2003
Battles will be playing the Irving Plaza in New York city MelvinsFantômas (combined!) on May 21st.
February 28th 2003
Ian's new band, Debut Battles (being billed as Battles), will be playing the Middle East on the 15th of April, so I will try and get a few shots at the show. The mighty Helms are also playing, so get your arse there.
January 31st 2003
I have received a picture of Debut Battles at their first show in New York - find it at the pictures page.
December 23rd 2002
Added an interview with Ian Williams that I found on the net, find it at the articles page. Also, there are rumblings that Ian has joined forces with John Stanier (drummer from Helmet and Tomahawk) in a new project called Debut Battles. Watch this space for more info...
November 14th 2002
It looks like Damon Che has walked (or rather, driven with the tour van) out of Bellini. More details can be found on www.snowingsun.com. Check the pictures on the website - Eric Emm and Todd Trainer make appearances, among others.
August 21st 2002
Bellini have a new and improved website available at www.snowingsun.com.
July 11th 2002
Damon Che's new band, Bellini, has 3 tracks from their forthcoming album, Snowing Sun, available on the Monitor Records website.
July 8th 2002
Damon's high school band, Half Life, is doing a reunion show in Pittsburgh next month! Note that the flyer pictured on Half Life's site says the 31st St. Pub show is on Aug. 23, while the Pub's web site says Aug. 24, so keep that in mind...It's possible that Damon will be part of the reunion.
February 1st 2002
OK, I've removed the details of the eBayer that I thought had ripped me off, since he just sent me the Don Caballero Chunklet 7". Thanks to whoever sent him abusive mails to wake his ass up. Anyway, playing it at 33rpm sounds really awful, but not as bad as 45rpm. Whoever taped or encoded it definitely got the speed wrong somewhere...
November 26th 2001
Fred Weaver has written a sizable article chronicling the last days of Don Caballero - for more info get Chunklet mag #16. Fred may be touring with Bellini again in April/May 2002, so watch this (and his) space.
I also just won an eBay auction for a really rare Don Caballero 7" which has 2 live songs from their second ever gig. When I get it, I'll try mp3 it for whoever wants it (unless I get sued of course).
September 6th 2001
I've just discovered a decent article on Membranaphonics in the Baltimore City Paper which includes a small bit from Damon. Have a read if you're interested.
July 17th 2001
I got to see Bellini in the Middle East last Wednesday night, and they were pretty good. The crowd was tiny and the mix was awful, but the gig was very interesting. At times it did sound like Don Cab meets Uzeda, but they had some very effective moments also. Well worth seeing by all means, and I'm looking forward to hear their long player.
In other news - if you're a cheap git and you want to hear Damon Che's contribution to the Monitor Records drummer's compilation Membranaphonics, then just go to his page on the Epitonic website.
July 9th 2001
Bellini are touring - as of tonight! I'll try catch them in Boston on Wednesday and post a review. Here are the dates as found on Fred Weaver's website:
07.09 Pittsburgh, PA -- Millvale Industrial Theater 07.10 Cleveland, OH -- Grog Shop (w/ Golden) 07.11 Boston, MA -- Middle East (w/ Major Stars) 07.12 NYC, NY -- Brownies (w/ Golden) 07.13 Philadelphia, PA -- The Khyber (w/ Golden) 07.14 Baltimore, MD -- Ottobar 07.15 Washington, DC -- The Black Cat (w/ Early Humans) 07.16 Chapel Hill, NC -- Go! May 17th 2001
Some more news on Bellini, Damon Che's new band (apparently from Fred Weaver, who supported Don Cab on their last tour):
"I'm going to be touring in July with Damon's (Don Cab drummer) new
band, Bellini...I'm not sure if we'll be doing any all ages shows, but we'll see...Bellini doesn't have any records out yet... They're recording at the end of the shows we're doing together and should have a record out next spring. I'm not sure that it'll be on Touch and Go, but I'd imagine it would considering that both Don Cab and Uzeda (the guitarist, Augo's other band) are on T+G. I don't know if they have a permanent bass player yet...
April 5th 2001
It appears that Damon Che and Agustino Trilotta from Uzeda (a really fine Italian band) have joined forces in a new band called Bellini. They have played Baltimore and Chicago recently, so maybe you'll get the chance to hear them yourself. I've no idea how they sound, nor do I know what instrument Damon plays in the band, so let me know if you saw them.
On an unrelated note, I'd like to say that Jim Fowler's live recording of Don Cab's show in Chicago last year is really fantastic. I'm going to try and mp3 the CD and place the best tracks on this page for download, because it's really good stuff. I'd use Napster, but I have a client side firewall which prevents people downloading from my machine, sorry!
March 12th 2001
More Don Caballero live show recordings from their last tour are surfacing. Jim Fowler has kindly offered to make the Don Cab show from 15th July 2000 in Chicago available to whoever wants it. I haven't heard it myself, but apparently it is of excellent quality. Drop Jim a line if you want to get it.
February 15th 2001
I recently discovered a recording of Don Cab's last show on Napster. It's from the Grog Shop in Cleveland, from November 20th of 2000. The sound quality is pretty good, but the drums are pretty thin sounding. Anyway, to download it, try searching for "Don Caballero Live", and disregard the dozens of versions of "Slice Where You Live Like Pie" that it finds :-)
Or, you could just go to the source - it was this fine gentleman that recorded the show and MP3'ed it.
December 4th 2000
Well, apparently, Don Cab have broken up! This is not really official yet, but this article, apparently written by Fred Weaver (who supported the band on their recent tour) has been making its way around the net. Make your own mind up I guess...
November 17th 2000
I caught Don Caballero live on Wednesday night at the Middle East in Boston. They were really excellent, although there were some, er, 'altercations' during the show between the band and Pizza, who were meant to open for them but didn't (weren't allowed to?). Anyway, each band member also did a very interesting solo set before the main gig.
BTW, the red t-shirts that they are selling at the shows come highly recommended.
October 26th 2000
Well, it looks like Don Caballero are on tour again, so check the main page to see if they are coming to your town! They're coming to Boston, so I'm happy, at least. Strangely enough, King Crimson are playing Boston a couple of days before they do...hmmm...
BTW, if you haven't got American Don yet, buy it - it is really very good.
August 31st 2000
Touch And Go have dropped some more info on the new LP:
'TG218 Don Caballero - "American Don": Don Cab's fourth long-player is out to disrupt its relationship to the "heavy" moniker much in the way that
"What Burns Never Returns" troubled the band's relation to "math rock."
Can there be a hard rock record without distorting, except for one 20 second
circus-like theme? Band members have been heard to comment: "This material
is definitely harder than the older stuff."'
Early insider reports on the album hint that it is definitely more Storm&Stress - like. Which is not a bad thing, especially after hearing the sample track on the Southern website.

The liner notes for American Don apparently read:
"recorded at electrical audio A room chicago by the proprieter. photos are vogtanORIginals. babbitt layout. very important to thank -- steve, corey, andy."
So for those of you who don't know - the 'proprieter' is a Mr. Steve Albini.

There is a new Don Caballero long player on the way, entitled American Don. Southern had the following to say in their latest newsletter:
"...Don Caballero have `American Don' (TG218) their fourth album proper and further proof of their unique ability to re-structure their sound with each successive release. Some people have mentioned King Crimson - this is not a bad thing we feel."
The Southern.com mail order site mentions: "9 tracks. 55.56minutes. First new album in over 2 years. Recorded by Steve Albini. Double gatefold vinyl."
