The mountain country Altai lays in the south of Siberia between 48° and 56° Northern breadth and is closely to laying by east Kuzneckogo Alatoo, Salair, Western Sajan, Tainu-Ola and Mongolian Altai. Altai is connected to them by orography and on structure, therefore it is difficultly to carry out the sharp border here. Usually as border, between Altai and Western Sajan, consider âîäîðàçäåë of pools Bii, Abakan and Øàïøàëüñêèé õðåáåò. In the south of and þãî-east Mountain Àëòàé incorporates with Mongolian Altai through boundary file Tabun-Bogdo-Ola and departing from it the south-Altai ridge, Sailjugem and Chihach. South-west Altai are stretched up to the Zaisan lake.

The general tendencies - increase of heights from north-west to south-east and expressed asymmetry of slopes: North-west slopes abrupt, south-western and southern - flat. Between ridge flow the numerous rivers, which are characteristic deep valley with abrupt slopes. Among the most the large rivers - Bija, Bashkaus and Chuliiman, feeding through Teleckoe lake.
