  • FLORIDA KEYS HAWK MIGRATION : FIELD ASSISTANT AND 4 VOLUNTEERS needed 1 Aug - 15 Nov 1997. Goals include an overflight census of 16 raptor species, flight behavior in the Keys, and conservation issues such as stopover habitat use. In our second field season, fall 1996, we observed over 15,000 raptors. Peregrine Falcons were the 4th most common species; we had the highest one-day count of migrant Peregrines seen at any watch-site in the U.S. and the 2nd highest season total. Free, comfortable, oceanside lodging provided on Grassy Key is also the primary field site (50 miles north of Key West). Field assistant salary total is $2,688 plus $232 for travel; appointment to this position is based on field and management experience. Three volunteers will receive $70 per week and one will be offered partial-board. Applicants will be considered for lengths of stay from 8 to (preferably) 14 weeks. Some raptor or ornithological experience necessary but field training will be available; some data-entry experience helpful. Must be able to get along well with others and withstand sunlight.
