BRIEF HISTORY


 

In early 1861 Maryland secessionists were silenced by President Lincoln's writ of habeas corpus.



In May 1861 some 800 Marylanders fled to Virginia
and offered thier sevices to the Confederate States
Army and formed the 1st Maryland Infantry


Without the support from the State Government the
1st Maryland Infantry quickly won respect as the best
dressed,the best disciplined and the best drilled unit
in the Army of North Virginia


29th May 1861 Mrs. Bradley Johnson procures 500
Mississippi Smooth Bore Muskets and 10,000
cartridges from the Governor of Virginia

19th June 1861 in it's first action 1st Maryland Infantry
recoverd 17,000 rifle stocks accidentally abandoned at
Harpers Ferry


18th July 1861 Johnson assigns the 1st Maryland Infantry
to the 4th Brigade under General Edmond Kirby-Smith
The 1st Maryland Infantry marches to Piedmont on it's
way to Manassas.


21st July 1861 1st Maryland Infantry boarded the train
for Manassas.On arrival,Kirby-Smith is wounded
Col. Elzey takes command of the Brigade.
He then outflanks the enemy and helps to turn the tide at Henry House Hill. Elzey is promoted to Brigadier General
Col. Stuart takes command of the 1st Maryland.


27th June 1862the Battle of Gains Mill.The 1st Maryland arrives late and are sent to the front, whereConfederate forces are breaking and running.When the troops began to faulter under fire, Col Johnson puts them through the Manual of Arms while they are still under fire,steading them.
