The Chum Salmon

The chum salmon is second in size only to the King salmon. Which makes it a good target if you want to catch a fish over 15 pounds.

As I have said before, chums can be caught in many diffrent ways. The most effective way is using drift gear. Another good technique is fishing a marabou jig under a float for a slow presention, good colors are red and pink, red, purple and black.

Last season I tryed fly fishing for chums for the first time. It was so much fun that I'm going to do it again this year! Here are some of techniques I used to catch them.

Fishing along current edges is a good way to find moving fish. If you see fish jumping cast to where you think they're going. Remember, just because the fish are jumping doesn't mean they're on the surface. Most of the time they're four to five feet down, however this is not always true, sometimes the fish are right on the surface!

Another place to look is in slow pools or side channels. When fishing pools I like to let the fly sink to the bottom then start striping it in slowly, this will catch fish. At other times a faster retrieve is more effective.
