The Coho salmon

The coho salmon is one of most popular of all salmon species. On my home river the run is usually about five thousand fish. Coho can be caught using some of the same methods you would use for steelhead. Bad weather means good fishing for coho. Fishing with eggs and a small corkie is extremely effective in most conditions you will encounter on your home river. Spoons and spinners like this one are good choices when water visibilty is low. The best colors are red and sliver or brass.

Cohos are also easily taken on flies. I haven't fly fished for coho much, but I can recommend some fly patterns that work. The marabou spider is a good pattern for both salmon and steelhead. In the water it looks like a piece of salmon roe floating down stream. So it should be fished with a sinking line and a six to four foot leader depending on river condtions. Another way to fish this pattern for salmon is to sight fish. Using polarized sun glasses walk along the bank looking for dark shadows moving around along the edge of deep pools or through shallow riffles. Once you spot a school of fish start by casting up stream of them and letting it drift past. If you see one of them make a sudden move toward your fly set the hook!
