Climbers Shine - Juniors set high standards as Day 1 of the Junior X Games goes off November 02, 1999 Patong Beach, Phuket, Thailand... The future starts of extreme sports showed the world what tp look forward to as the inaugural Disney Channel/ESPN Junior X Games presented by Toyota roared into action yesterday with the first rounds and quarterfinals of the Aggressive in-line skating, Sport Climbing, Skateboarding and Bicycle Stunt events. Young X-competitors from Asia and the Pacific Rim wowed excited crowds with displays of gravity-defying athleticism on the climbing walls, street course and half-pipe ramp. An enthusiastic contingent of partisan spectators were rewarded when home skaters Nicolas Schopfer and Surawat Bumrungkij made it a Thai one-and two in the Aggressive In-line Street Skating. They booked book places in the semi finals. Fellow countrymen Worapoj Boonnim, Zachary Hamel and Michael Harrison join them. Worapoj and Surawat lead the Aggressive In-line Slalom event and there are 5 Thai skaters well placed in the ten qualifiers for todays semifinals. Takeshi Yatsutoko heads the leaderboard in the Aggressive In-line Vert and Best-trick category. The young Japanese pro-skater dominated these events at last years Asian X Games Qualifier. One of the biggest cheers of the night under the floodlights of the half pipe ramp was for Thai superstar Anwan Anwar who qualified for the Aggressive In-line Best Trick semifinals in 9th position. Earlier in the day, climbers Pipoy Cosculluela and Tagoy Ledesma from the Philippines amazed onlookers with the graceful ease and speed with which they ascended the dramatically overhanging bouldering walls. On the Tsunami wall climbers must climb through a 3 metre horizontal roof section which requires technique, strength and great stamina. The boys are also placed second and third place respectively in the Speed climbing event behind Michael Foo of Malaysia who (briefly!) entertained the crowd by taking just 3.187 seconds to ascend the 7-meter high climbing wall. In the female section, Australias Sophie Irvine leads the speed climbing event going into the semi-finals and is in second place in the bouldering category behind Shaina Gu of Taiwan. Experienced Filipino climber Kristle Hawkins lies second in the speed event and third in the bolder category and is sure to put up a strong challenge in todays semifinal events. The Australian flag flew high after yesterdays skateboarding quarterfinals with Blake Ellis leading the Slalom, Best Tricks and Vert categories. The Aussie is also well positioned in 2nd place in the Street category behind local hero Keatipong of Thailand, setting up what promises to be an exciting semifinal round. The official website, located at www.espnstar.com/asianxgames carries daily updates and reports from the event. Koreans and
Indonesians Share Climbing Spoils
- Lightening Quick Speed Finals
Bring Sport Climbing Event to Thrilling Climax
November 07, 1999 Patong Beach,
Phuket, Thailand... Honours
were even yesterday between the two Asian power houses of womens
Sport Climbing as Koreas Heun Cheoung Kim and Indonesias
Etha Hendrawati won the Gold medals in the Bouldering and Speed
events at the 1999 Asian X Games Qualifier sponsored by Toyota.
In the female bouldering category Heun Cheoung Kim demonstrated
immense power and dexterity. She delicately traversed the
wickedly overhanging roof section and cranked through the lip to
top out on the first route of the Muay Thai wall. The Korean
climber was obviously tired but managed to regain her composure
and gain the highest point on the second, Tsunami wall to take
the bouldering title. Rie Kimura of Japan reached the top of
route one on her third attempt. Stamina deserted her on route 2
despite a courageous effort but her overall performance was
sufficient to earn the Silver. Mi Sun Go it a double medal stand
for Korea when she powered her way to third place.
In the speed events the Indonesians rule the roost. Etha
Hendrawati went two better than her 1998 Asian X Games Qualifier
Bronze medal by racing up the Speed wall to Gold. The 24-year old
climber had a comparatively easy win in Speed final, reaching the
top of the wall in 14.21 seconds, almost 5 seconds ahead of
runner-up and compatriot Yunyun Yuniar who topped out at 18.90
seconds. They were joined on the medal podium by Mi Sun Go
The male speed event produced the closest of finals. The title,
gold medal and US$4500 prize went to Nur Rohman Rosyid of
Indonesia who posted a lightening quick time of 12.23 on his
final climb, just 1/10 second ahead of Silver winner Ronald
Mamarimbing, also from Indonesia. Rosyids Gold medal was
just reward for consistently good climbing. The Indonesian dynamo
posted times below 13.00 seconds in all 4 of his assaults on the
monster wall. The Bronze medal went to Korean Climber Dong Sik
Kim who matched countrywoman Mi Sun Gos performance of a
Bronze double by also taking third place in the male bouldering
finals.
The Sport Climbing Bouldering title went to the always smiling
Jae Yong Lee of Korea. The powerful climber took two attempts to
complete route 1 named Shock Treatment, taking a nasty fall from
high on the wall, on his first try. Lee took just one shot to
reach the highest point on route two on the Tsunami wall.
Japanese Silver medallist Takehiko Yamazaki also topped out on
route 1 but struggled on the demanding second route, named
ironically Easy Rider.
