THE GREAT UTAH DESERT!

FRESH AIR AND SUNSHINE!

WHAT DO YOU FIND IN THE DESERT?

I'll tell you some things that are there:

Lizards, stink bugs, horn toads, jack rabbits, cotton tail rabbits and rabbit holes, ants and ant hills by the thousands,

coyotes, beetles, flies, fleas, ticks, hot sun in the summer, icy cold in the winter, rocks, sand and more sand, dirt, endless flat baren land, washes (like big crooked dry ditches, that have water in them only when it rains) dozens of white jet trails criss-crossing each other all over the sky, foxes and their dens, badgers and badger holes, gophers, quimps, mice and their holes, grease woods, brush, weeds, sage brush, sticks, occasionally a cedar tree, grass, snakes, rattle snakes, scorpions, spiders, including tarantulas, spider webs, wild horses, cattle, antelope, deer, birds: sparrows, crows, hawks, butcher birds, eagles, grouse, doves, pheasants, and many others, and tons of other things.

If you go out into the desert, either by walking, on a horse, in a 4 wheel drive vehicle, or some other way, you would probably not see a lot of the things mentioned above. You would see the land, with it's dirt, rocks, & sand, etc. You would see the brush, the washes, ant hills, some crows, and other birds, an occasional rabbit, the jet trails in the sky. You would usually see lots & lots of blue sky, and sometimes big fluffy white clouds. For a real experience be there at night when you can look up at the sky. It is so clear and so full of stars that you will be amazed. Stars, stars, stars! jillions of them! If the moon is there you will have an added bonus, It can be so bright and big and pretty. Nights in the desert can be beautiful. You can be scared out of your wits, if you suddenly here a coyote howl. It can sound like several coyotes all howling at once, yet it will be only one. Perhaps another one will howl in answer to it, sounding like a dozen more. Some of the boys (& men) around here like to go out at night and hide in the brush, and make sounds like a coyote howling. They have devices to call with, or just get talented, enough to use there own voices to sound like a coyote. One of the boys told about hiding down behind a brush and calling a coyote with that houl. Suddenly a coyote came running right towards him and jumped right over him. Does that sound fun, or what? Yeah, I know, "OR WHAT!" The reason they make these coyote howling sounds is to get the coyotes to come to them, thinking they are another coyote. "No, they won't bite you, only if they are caught in a trap or something. Then it's in self defense. They are quite scared of people, so will run away from you if they see you.

It is interesting to see a coyote running across the desert. They kind of lope along, kind of like they are running with a broken leg. I have seen no other animal that runs like a coyote. They are gray and kind of small and skinny, with a long tail, about the size of an average dog. Ocassionaly one can be seen as you travel in the desert.

You will experience beautiful weather sometimes, and it can get very hot in the summer time, and cool at night. It gets cold in the winter, and very cold at night. Sometimes the wind blows. It can blow hard, too, since there is nothing out there to slow it down except the brush, and they have very little effect on the wind. Sometimes it rains, sometimes snows or hails. Sometimes the weather is just perfect.

If you really want to get serious about seeing the other things in the desert, You may have to look closely at the ground to see the ants, spiders, and other insects. You will be amazed at how many ant hills there are. You may get the idea the ants have taken over the earth, because there are so many billions of them. Many of the ant hills are around one foot high. The closer you get to an ant hill, the more thickly populated they are. They are very industrious little creatures. Be careful not to stand in one spot or they will start crawling on you, and they bite hard. It hurts. I laughed one day when I saw several ant hills with lawns! Well it looked like it. There was grass growing around the bottom of the ant hill. Everywhere else was just dry dirt. It must have been an exclusive ant neighborhood. They usually cut down every plant within several feet around the ant hill.

Come again! More desert coming.................!
