Looking after Industry and Environment
Representatives from the Mining Association of Canada,
the Sierra Club of Canada, the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association,
the Canadian Nature Federation, the National Agricultural
Environment Committee and the Canadian Wildlife Federation
have found common ground in trying to help look after the
interests of both endangered species and landowners.
Proposed new endangered species legislation would incorporate:
- an independent scientific committee that would identify
endangered plants and animals. This could include
commercial fishery species such as cod and salmon.
- protection of endangered animals' lives and habitat.
- assistance, tax breaks and sometimes compensation for
landowners who lose the commercial or industrial use of their
land because it is home to endangered species.
- recovery plans to help species at risk including
tracking and followup on these plans.
