Announced in October 1997, this area in northeastern British Columbia consists of 1 million hectares of protected area and 3.3 million hectares of special management areas, which will serve as buffer zones and corridors for wildlife. This is not a provincial park but a specially protected conservation area.
Wildlife includes grizzly bears, elk, caribou, wolverines, moose, black bears, mountain goats, eagles and wolves. In combination with Canadian and U.S. National Parks in the Rockies, Muskwa Kechika keeps alive the hope that a wilderness corridor can be preserved along the North American Rockies from Yellowstone to the Yukon.
