Winter Blanket

Snow provides an insulating layer of warmth which can keep the ground temperature higher than it would be if it was bare. It also reduces water loss from the ground surface and the spring melt can be an important source of ground water. Often, a sudden thaw can result in too much water in the same place at the same time, causing flooding.

While snow can inhibit the movements of larger animals such as deer, some small animals such as mice or voles make their winter homes under the snow. Other animals such as the snowshoe hare and lynx have feet adapted to travel on top of the snow.

In the time of the glaciers, more snow fell in the winter than melted in the summer over most of Canada.
