Maggie, My SMP
In November I fianlly got Maggie out on her first hunting trip. We spent a week in Michigan Hunting Pheasants, then we went to North Western Pa for a week for a small game hunt. There are web sites out there tellin all about the SMP and there are alot of breeders in the states, but mostly in the North East that I've found so far! finally got my puppy, Maggie out hunting for her first time, only had her trained with a Pheasant wing prior to the trip. We hit the first field and within 5 minutes she was on a solid point on her first bird! We got our limit every day and she worked her butt off! Now ya say the word hunt around her and she goes nuts! *S* I train my dogs to be huntin dogs, not specialist dogs like some do in the States, I use the German training techniques. She also retrieved a large cottontail to me that I shot. She lock on to a flock of Quail and I just stood there watchin as they exploded into the air, I finally recovered in time to get one, while she was point a few singels. I miss spotted the downed bird and told her to hunt it up, she wouldnt quit and within 10 minutes had found it! Needless to say I was really impressed with her on this first hunt! I'm trying to find a Male in the area to breed her with. This breed is an excellent house dog, loves attention and to please it's master. They are great with kids and love to perform for you. Maggie does about 50 tricks, including hi 5 and the neighbor kids love her. I've trained alot of breeds and would recommend this one above all others. TO answer your questions, I was born and raised in Warren, Pa, these are smart close working dogs, that will point anything. They are easier to train than a Brit, I've trained them too, they have so much natural ability that they will surprise you everytime you hunt with them! You could see in the pic of her with my shorthair, they get along great with other dogs have a great temperment and love to play. Size, the female is about 17-19 inches and the male is 18-21, they weigh about 45 pounds, are solidly built and can work all day! I am hoping to meet with some friends from New Mexico for an extended bird hunt in the upcomming 2000 season. If I do find a male, I will let you all know about the availiblity of puppies. If you are interested in getting more information, e-mail me at washburs@olg.com. As usual, since this page is a work in progress, it will be updated more at a later date.
