Casey Sluys Directs The Ed Loranger Open

Doyle Park, Aug. 10, 1997 Santa Rosa, CA 38 pitchers (3 Morning/2 Afternoon group)
Next Tournament:Sonoma County Open. 8/24/1997 (Reverse Start); C-U-There! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From the President, Ed Loranger: Well I got here bright and early -- didn't want to be late to my own tournament! My son Chris had to work but my other son Dale, the reigning Sonoma County Champion, and I were the first to arrive. It was a bit chilly, and if that wasn't enough, some animals had attacked the garbage cans during the night. Remnants of yesterday's bar-b-que were quickly cleaned up by my wife Shannon, bless her. Sunday morning, cold, garbage, hey it was my day! Made the coffee real good too! Once everyone started arriving we got the pits all swept and everything was perfect. I got a bit nervous though when 9:00 AM came around and we only had about 20 players. Then a resurgent group of pitchers showed up at 9:15 and we seated 38 pitchers for the tournament. Excellent! I like the heat and was lucky to get an afternoon start. "It's my day", I thought. Then I lucked out and found a Jelly doughnut, then a custard too! I bought a stretch of raffle tickets hoping to win the big 'Carpenter's tool box'. Real nice, and a tremendous gift donated by Greg Ellisen. (Greg teaches woodshop at Piner High School). I didn't win the box, but got a bottle of Chateau Beardeaux, 12 Bud's, redwood tree seedling, and taffy. Good Stuff! Needless to say the weather warmed up and so did I. Only lost one game -- My nemesis Jack Sprecker. Jack and Greg Ellisen were seeded 1 and 2. With Jack and I tied for first and Greg needing a win for a shot at second, Greg got by Jack and left me alone with 1st place! Then it got interesting, Greg and Jack, both with 2 losses also tied in percentage! Gail's worked quickly under anticipating eyes and Jack edged Greg for second on Points. I want to thank everyone for attending, especially Steve Barnes who traveled just for my tournament. Also, after watching Steve Throw in the morning I adopted some of his mannerisms and I'm sure this was key to my success. Ken Schulze and Don Kies really duked it out over the weekend, but Don had to settle for second both days. Ken, my hat's off to you, excellent competition and you won both days. You're a true tournament Champion! One last note -- It take a lot of coordination to run a single tournament. It is great to see everyone helping out each morning and the place looked great. I'm real proud to be a member -- and you should be too. Also, Casey Sluys was Tournament Director two days running. No easy task. Casey, President of Northern California Pitching Association -- I thank you for a job most excellently done! You all definitely "Made My Day". -Ed Loranger P.S. Happened to Catch Slim Parnel eyeing my bottle of Chateaux bordeaux. Then I saw he had won the carpenters box. Hmmmmm. Well, we traded and I took the box home. Already got a nice deep danish oil-rubbed finsh done on it! Sweet! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Activities by Tournament Director, Casey Sluys:
