Ed Loranger Directs The Sonoma County Championships------------------------------------------------------------------------Doyle Park, Sep. 27, 1997 Santa Rosa, CA 19 pitchers (3 Morning groups)
Next Tournament:Gail Sluys Open 10/4/1997 AND Soco Open 10/5; C-U-There! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From the President, Ed Loranger: The Sonoma county Championships is a very special tournament. Only those Sonoma County members who have at least 6 months membership may compete for the Burlwood Plaque. (see champions ) The Plaque is a perpetual trophy, initiated in 1979, which contains the nameplates bearing prior Sonoma County Champions of record. The list dates back to 1934 or so. Only the top 8 pitchers are eligible to compete for the plaque. All other 1st and 2nd Place winners will receive a custom engraved plaque. In the past, an etching of the State of California, pitcher's name and percentage is on the plaque. It is beautiful. Last years Champion, Junior pitcher Dale Loranger, was unable to defend his title due to obligations in High School. Pitching for the plaque were:Gail Sluys, Ken Schulze, George Greeott, Dianne Shortridge, Charlie Dubs, Casey Sluys, Earl Smith, and Eldon Bryhan. In the presence of board members:Ed Loranger, C.E. Dubs, Dianne Shortridge and Herself, Gail Sluys proposed that the tournament be $5 entry, and 100% payout to top 3 places. Also, $2 for each entrant would be paid to NHPA, by our club. This was passed, unanimously by the 4 club officers. Additionally, we voted that the available payout to each group would be from actual funds collected for that group. The only fixed requirement being that 3rd place was guaranteed Five Dollars ($5). Note:See results. It was a wonderful day of pitching. Everyone liked the payout and lower $5 entry fee. When the dust finally settled, Gail Sluys won the Tournament Champion title and the honor of proudly display the Burlwood Plaque for one year. All the pitchers converged at the stats table as the tally became final. And amongst her clapping friends and fellow pitchers, I presented the plaque to the now beaming Gail Sluys. But the hunt isn't over, I heard. Many of those A1 games were pretty close. And I expect there will be plenty of hungry pitchers craving that trophy for next year. Congratulations to Gail and all our pitchers. -Ed Loranger, President Sonoma County Horseshoe Club. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Activities by Tournament Director, Ed Loranger:
