Born in Gentry, Arkansas the 11th of August 1888. Stayed there till she married Joe Brown then moved to Kansas
Grandma Brown's Spice Cake from 1922
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup sour milk (regular milk may be substituted)
2 cups flour
Grease and flour a 13x9x2" pan and set aside. Preheat your oven to 350 Degrees.
Mix all of these ingredients together and pour into pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes and remove from oven.
Topping
1/2 cup brown sugar
4 teaspoons flour
2/3 cup nuts (chopped)
4 Tablespoons butter or margarine (melted)
2 Tablespoons water
Mix all of the ingredients together and spread over the top of the hot cake.
Return to the 350 degree oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes more.
