There are several ways to get from South Lake Tahoe over to US395. The route shown on the map goes over Kingsbury Grade to Minden. I prefer going south on SR89 over Luther Pass to SR88 and then into Minden. Unfortunately, using Map & Go for the maps, I am unable to "force" that route on the map.
The route over Luther Pass is fairly easy. A long upgrade to the
top & then a long downhill, but neither is too steep. The road
from Picket junction (88/89) to Minden is a long downhill, but once again
not too steep. From Minden to Topaz is a good road and most of it
is 4 lane.

From South Lake Tahoe I take US50 over Echo Summit to Sacramento. From Sacto continue west on US 50/80 to Cordelia Jct. Then take SR12-116 to US101 at Petaluma. Go north on 101 to Santa Rosa and get back on SR 12 west to Bodega Bay.

From Bodega Bay you backtrack to Santa Rosa where you get back on US101. From there to Myers Flat is an easy drive and you do go through some of the Redwood Groves along the way.
