When we first started hiking we were at least 30 over the ideal weight. I said ughhh! This hiking is too much work. We loved the views and being outdoors in the forests though. My doctor recommended that I take measures to lose weight. He said a lot of people are walking 20-30 minutes 3-4 times a week. A friend of mine at work who is also into hiking mountains suggested walking at lunch. A group of us from work would speed walk 2 miles each day at lunch. Betsy also started regularly doing a 3 mile loop in our neighborhood. In just a short time we lost 15 pounds. We felt and looked younger. The next mountain hike we did was remarkably easier. I decided to take it to the next level. I now jog 3-4 miles 5-6 times a week and over the long haul have lost 35 pounds. I stay in shape aerobically and have since 1990. Hiking changed how I take care of my body. We also like to cross country ski. X-Skiing as I like to call it keeps us going during those long winters. Hiking also has inspired me to keep off the booze. We are reformed alcoholics. It was an addiction. I was way out of control. My doctor, Dr. Mark Sockell also suggested that I quit drinking after having a poor result on a liver function test. Hiking has replaced my drinking habit. I get high on the mountains instead. I am not sure if my hiking habit is out of control. Who knows! I do however feel and look younger. So I have walked to the fountain of youth. Do you need to follow on this trail?
