This is what we have done so far and what we plan to
do next..........
Betsy and I have climbed all the mountains listed on the
AMC's 4000 foot list in New Hampshire. We started the
list in October of 1990 and completed the list on September
3,1997. Mount Lincoln was the first and Mount Madison was
the last. We went to the AMC's peak bagging ceremony in
Boston on April 19,1998. We received a 4000 foot patch and
certificate of accomplishment. About 400 people were there
and we all witnessed each others moment of glory. Even a
dog got an award for climbing all the 4000 footers. He
barked proudly when he heard his name called. Kids of all
ages received these awards.
It was the weekend before Patriots Day, so we got
to see how the Boston Marathon is set up. I crossed the
finish line ....... (smirking with tongue in cheek).
While we were in Boston we had dinner in the North End.
Italian cuisine in the North End of Boston is almost like
visiting Italy itself.
We are working on the other 4000 foot peaks in
New England at this time. So far we have climbed Mount
Katahdin, North Brother, and Hamlin Peak. We plan to
climb one in mid to late May in the Grafton Notch area in
Maine.
After hiking the 4000 footers in New Hampshire we were kind
of sad when it was over because we truly enjoyed the
experience. At that time it became necessary to find other
mountains to climb. The New England's Hundred Highest was a
possibility but, some of those peaks require mountaineering
skills with map and compass. This is something that we are
not competent at. We have climbed some of the ones with
trails and will climb more. Perhaps some day we will tag
along with someone who knows what he or she is doing. There
are many peaks that aren't on any known lists that afford
spectacular views. To remedy this we have
compiled a list our selves. We call it Mark and Betsy's
list of hikes with a trail and a view. The tentative plans
are to make a homemade patch and certificate. If you would
like a list please e-mail us and we will forward it to you.
Later we plan to have the list on line in a printable or
copy-n-paste text page. If you complete the list we will
send you a certificate. It will look homemade though. The
peaks on this list were researched by yours truly and the
requirement was for the peak to be over 2500 feet above sea
level and have a nice view with a maintained trail. The
beauty of this is that children may also do many of these
hikes. Thanks for taking the time to read this page and we
hope to see you on the trail someday.
E-mail us anytime we would love to hear about your fondest
memories. Here are some pics related to this topic. us the day of our last climb
