Welcome to my web page.
Most people call me Jackie. Those who know my scatterbrained tendency can recognize when my other personality is present and will call me Bambi during those times when my brain has slipped a gear or two. For details on how I came to be called Bambi, see the Friends and Family section.
I am a veterinarian. My undergraduate degree is in biology from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina and I received my DVM from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.
We are a mixed animal practice. The hospital is one of the larger practices in the state for small animals. My associate veterinarian does equine and other large animals, while I concentrate my skills on small animals and management. We have five examination rooms, a laboratory, pharmacy, a two-table surgery suite, spacious treatment room, x-ray room and darkroom. We can accommodate five pets in our contagious ward, ten pets in the post-op and hospital ward and four pets in Intensive Care. The boarding area is indoors and climate-controlled. We have 20 runs for larger dogs and 5 cages for smaller dogs or cats. In addition to x-rays, we have an Ultrasound machine and an ECG. Our lab is fully equipped.
I’m proud of my high standards of care and attention to detail, especially where it comes to educating people about what’s best for their pets.
For more information about how to become a veterinarian and veterinary practice in general, see my section on Holmes Veterinary Hospital.
I am fortysomething, married and have a 1996 model human named Nolan. Surprisingly, Nolan does not have much interest in animals. He likes Star Wars, four wheelers, tractors, tools and all things mechanical, and firetrucks. Which brings me to other other human I share a home with. My significant other, spouse, or old man-“Greasy” Burns. Greasy is a professional firefighter, a captain in a full-time department. He gets to do cool stuff like investigate arsons and get people out of wrecked cars and fires.
Among other things, Greasy (he really isn’t greasy, but when I need him to do something, he’s downright slippery) does electrical contract work and owns/oversees a small cabinet shop. He also makes a sells some hay. He actually built our house, our barn and acted as general contractor in 1998 when we built the new Holmes Veterinary Hospital.
We have a medium-sized farm and raise horses, an assortment of quarter horses, apps and paints. We board a couple of horses and have one AQHA point-producer broodmare. We also have chickens, cats and two German-shorthaired pointers.
When I not working, hunting or keeping up with the family, I enjoy creative writing, cooking, reading and sometimes I even ride a horse.
Okay, I’m a hunter. A serious one. I’ve hunted obsessively since about 1982 (and sporadically before then). My daddy got me interested by taking me rabbit and squirrel hunting when I was very small, but I took up deer hunting on my own.
Along the way, I had some help that got me interested in hunting wild turkeys. I haven’t been the same since then. I travel widely to hunt the grand birds. In 1995, I hosted a first of its kind all-women’s spring gobbler hunt, acting as teacher, scout and guide to a group of first time female turkey hunters. Then I began to work on a wild turkey hunting Grand Slam. In 1999, I completed my Grand Slam and in 2000 I completed my Royal Slam. Hopefully, the World Slam is not far away. . . See the section on Royal Slam for pictures of my birds.
I’m an NRA-certified Wild Turkey Hunting Instructor and a Sponsor member of the National Wild Turkey Federation.
My area of interest is getting women involved in outdoors sports-hunting and fishing.
