| Equipment and Weather
You won't see many of these in the U.K., but wherever you go,
you will need to be prepared appropriately. |
Always leave your route intentions, and expected return-time with a responsible person.
(Don't forget to let them know when you get back) |

|
SAFETY |
Appropriateness is the keyword.
- Little equipment may be required in summer on an easy walk.
- Make sure you can use what you carry.
- You should take: map, compass, whistle and basic first aid.
|
 |
CLOTHING |
It is possible to be a fashion-slave and wear good outdoor clothing, if that is your wont.
- Taking a waterproof top is essential in any season, in any part of the U.K.
- Wear comfortable breathable fabrics.
- If necessary wear several thin layers instead of a single thick layer of clothing.
- Don't wear orange and green together.
|
 |
FOOTWEAR |
Robust and comfortable footwear is essential. On good days in summer, trainers should be
OK. For most U.K. conditions, lightweight walking boots are best. |
 |
BACKPACK |
When going into the hills you will always need some kind of rucksack, even if its just
to carry your waterproof and your lip balm.I would suggest a minimum of a 20 litre sac,
this should be sufficient carrying capacity for a good walk on most days. |
 |
WHAT TO CARRY |
Again this depends on conditions and length of walk, but you should consider:
- Lunch pack
- Flask with a hot drink.
- First aid basics - elastoplast, suncream, triangular bandage.
- Gloves, hat,spare jumper.
- Always take a waterproof top.

WEATHER |
|
SAFETY |
Much of what I've said above applies here. The U.K. climate is very changeable
and walkers need to be prepared for inclement conditions if they are going to venture
very far from base. On about a dozen days in the year tee shirt and shorts will
suffice for a hillwalk. However for the vast majority of the time extra layers of
clothing will be needed to be added to those worn on the valley floor. |
 |
HEIGHT EFFECTS |
On leaving the valley floor the temperature will drop by about 3 degrees Fahrenheit
for every 1000 feet (300 metres) ascended. The wind chill at higher levels will reduce
temperatures even further. |
 |
INFORMATION SOURCES |
All regions in the U.K. have local weather centres which can advise on conditions
for walking in their area.Daily bulletins are often posted at popular spots giving
forecasts for walkers in that area. |
