If you are at track start point...
Now walk along that narrow corridor, passing under Cota Mil. After a short stairway you'll get to Sabas Nieves first ranger's house at Av. Boyacá (Cota Mil) level. Keep in mind that there is another up in Loma Serrano, the truly Sabas Nieves ranger house.
There are rest rooms in the house, but use them just if strictly necessary because they are not very hygienic. Also, they usually lack of electricity and toilet paper.
When you're out of corridor, you will see the path to Sabas Nieves just in from of you, in northwest direction. This road also takes you to Quebrada Quintero (high path). There is another route at your right that will take you also to Quebrada Quintero, but this is the low path. Take a look at Ranger's House Map - Cota Mil.
You have to know that there is a certain schedule to pass through this point:
- Monday to friday: From 5:30 am to 7:00 pm.
- Weekends: From 6:00 am to 7:00 pm.
There is a parking lot, but it serves only to Inparques and La Electricidad de Caracas personnel. That is how I don't recommend you to get here by car using Cota Mil.
In this area you'll find different kind of foods: Cakes, vegetarian hamburgers, ice creams, fruit salads, yogurt, falafel and sandwiches. Also lots of drinks: Orange, passion fruit, banana, carrot, pine apple, kiwi and watermelon juices, plus mixes, and native "papelon con limon".
Prices range between Bs. 250 for ice creams and Bs. 1300 for salads. A big glass of juice costs about Bs. 650.
Taking the road to Sabas Nieves you'll find at your left the billboard of "Centro de Conservación y Defensa Ambiental Sabas Nieves" - CECODA. This group offers visitors free excursions and workshops, and takes care of some cleaning and maintenance of park areas. Check out this billboard, it has some interesting information.
About 75 m (245 ft) away from ranger's house you'll get to Quebrada Seca (Dry Creek). The old path to Sabas Nieves is at left, now closed by work on power lines. Walk along watchman and keep going up on main road.
The path along Quebrada Seca is nice and shadowy. After about 100 m (330 ft) you'll find a bifurcation with a small bridge at left. This is the route you must take (and note it gets stepper!). The other path (right) leads to Quebrada Quintero (high path).
Click here to get a little map of this bifurcation.
It is wise to mention that usually this route is watched by National Guards concealed in the forest. If you need help, shout (and also behave yourself!).
