Wood Duck Boxes - a Conservation Project, BDUTroop-style

In 1995, BDUTroop decided to plan and perform a project to help improve conditions for the local Wood Duck population.

We invited Ducks Unlimited to come to our meeting and teach us about the ducks, their lifestyles, their habitat preferences, and the issues that threaten their survival.

Then we acquired plans and materials and built seven wood duck nesting boxes, which we hoped to install on a local island which is also a preserve. Unfortunately, the project stalled at that point - with the island being a preserve we could not get the necessary permission to "land" there to install or maintain the boxes...

What with one thing and another, it took us a while to finally complete this project, but with the help of the local Ecomuseum we finally got those boxes into the marshlands at the Ecomuseum in the fall of 1997.

Two of our Scouts were able to complete their World Conservation badges on the strength of this project, eventually leading to their completing their Chief Scout Awards.
