I find your site intriguing. I searched a long time and my final two options
came down to the Flicka, which is still for sale in Mandeville, Louisiana, or a
brand new boat. In part due to the wife's input, I opted for the Hunter. The
Flicka sits there dwa fed amongst all the big white boats. Originally it was
posted as a Pacific Seacraft 24-ft., so I thought it was the Dana, which is more
the size I was looking for, not looking to trailer the boat. So, I went and had
a look. Now I keep thinking about that olid looking little seafarer. I guess
I'll have to settle for sailing it via your website. Please keep us posted on
your progress. By the way, how did it go with the electronics? It seems to me
you may be straying a bit from your keep-it- simple philosophy. The lap top
itself costs a fortune, and you might drop it. I dropped mine, and it's very
fragile. It was a 100% loss! The hand-h ld VHS can be used from the cockpit and
costs less than $150.00. Hey, this ranting can be contagious! Thanks, Scott B

Thank you for providing a great sit and particularly you sailing boat calculator
which I found fascinating. I might add that the figures given for my boat
confirmed my feelings for her being a steady plodder, features I like. Must
admit though that while would love a bigger long keeler reality tells me that in
fact we sail our Careel far more often and in far more varied places than we
could ever sail an 'off shore' boat. The other plus of course is that we never
have the problem of being stuck in a harb ur by bad weather miles from home. I
retired 'early' at 55 to enjoy life and have never regreted it and have the joy
of knowing our boat is just outside in the drive waiting for the next adventure.
Happy sailing and thanks again for a great site. Jim Mitchell

I have been searching the web for some time now trying to find the perfect boat
to do the same kind of thing that you are doing. The boat that seems to be a
possible candidate in the Hake Seaward. http://www.seawardyachts.com/index.html
It has a carbon fiber mast that has no stays holding it up. Rather, it just
slides into the deck and away you go. I have never sailed one, but it is an
interesting idea. It does seem to be a little expensive but it could be worth
it. A draw back is that t ere is no forestay so there is no way you can fly a
jib. Just some food for thought. Enjoy your site.

Thanks for such a wonderful site. I picked up lots of useful information for
both my Potter and my Nor'Sea sailing. Smaller is better! I've sailed my Potter
all over the country and singlehanded my Nor'Sea from Ft. Smith, Arkansas, to
North Carolina, motoring more than expected. In my opinion the aft cabin Nor'Sea
is much better for singlehanding because the center cockpit puts you clos r to
the action, especially when docking, locking, or changing sails. The aft cabin
is nice for doublehanding, as the duty crew has the run of the boat without
bothering the off-watch crew. I use a kerosene lantern as an anchor light -- no
electric consumption, minimal fuel consumption, adjustable light intensity. The
Flicka is a great boat, but the Nor'Sea keeps all your sailing options open,
maybe eliminating your need to upgrade to a still bigger boat. I'd be glad to
answer any questions you have about Nor'Seas.

Read your Compac 19 story with interest. Have followed similar path last few
years: 17ft Mac, then 22 foot Venture, now the O'day with fixed keel. Did
electric motor on 17, until stranded in middle of Grand Lake one afternoon.
Prompted trade up to 22 w th outboard. Sailed most of the Lakes around KC, but
the headroom prompted a change after a couple of years. The O'Day has a fixed
wing keel. Has been best of the lot, with enclosed head, stern cut-out for
outboard (no lift brackets!), better head room about 5'5") and a stout
Isomat spar. Took it to Chicago last year from KC, sailed around the pier and
stayed at one of the City harbors by Lincoln park. A good time, but towing the
boat that far (at that time with a Chevy Tahoe 4x4) was a bit of a white knuckle
experience, especially when it was raining. Wish list for next boat: Place to
clean up on board, inboard power (could provide hot water, easier to keep
batteries charged, and keep prop in water), and prefer ability to sleep 2
without having to break down table. Had a trip planned for the Keys las part of
April, but had to postpone (wife's hobby is horses). Now thinking about
Chesapeke Bay around first of June. (I hear hurricane season starts in the Keys
in June). Next boat stuff: Really torn between big trailerable (same as your
list) or just keeping what I have until we can relocate to one of the coasts and
perhaps get a 28 - 30 footer. Been through Best Boats book and that Dana and
Falmouth Cutter look really ice. Like the later model Flickas that seem to have
an enclosed head. Agree with your Nor'Sea comments, but still would consider the
boat. Not quite convinced I want to tow any of them very far. Have a 1 ton
dually, but even so the Mfg max trailer rati g is right at 10,000. My O'Day is
supposed to weigh 3600, but on the trailer and ready to go actually tops out at
5800. I'm wondering if these other boats will be the same way. Definitely would
go with a triple axle trailer with electric brakes for seri us towing of
anything over 7K. I've only seen one of these boats here in the Midwest (I think
it was a Flicka), so still have some checking out to do. Good Luck on your
quest. I'll be interested to see what else you find out about the boats.

I grew up sailing on and near San Francisco bay, and I long to return to a sailing life.
An empty nester in my early fifties, I'm looking for a small pocket crusier. Your site is
GREAT! I stumbled across it today and read every word. It's been a great help and an
inspiration. Currently in the "looking" stage, I'm off to the Portland Boat Show
tomorrow and several marinas in the same area. Thanks for sharing your experiences and
your well laid out site. Smooth sailing to you. Jim

Loved the page. Your selection process has helped refine my own. I especially noted your
evaluation of the MacGregor 26, which I had thought to be my ideal. But at 6' 2" and
330 pounds I think the deck would give under me also. I'm sure I'll return to this
bookmarked page often. Take care.

Glad you had a good time in Florida Jobst. I've been doing the same thing around
here(Corpus Christi, TX) every year for the last 3 years. So far I've sailed from
Brownsville to Palacios Texas both inside the ICW and in the Gulf. There is so much to see
and do around here that I'm tempted not to ry to trailer the boat very far, but she trails
well and I want to see the clear water around Florida too. There is a big lake near Laredo
TX that I want to sail for a week or so also. I have had many experiences with dolphins
and cameras out of reach, I guess it's that way for everyone. I seem to be having too much
fun to be bothered with pictures, then regret not having them. I also envy those with
larger boats when on the water but right now she is sitting in the back yard not costing a
penny, and no getting full of weeds and barnacles, and that is pretty cool too. I'm
getting a sea swing stove to try out cooking while under way. I'll let you know how well
it works. By the way I'm 47 and having more fun sailing than I've had doing anything for
year .

I really enjoyed your web site. I am jumping through the same hoops you have already done
on the same boat! I was very happy to see that you found an appropriate solution to the
electrical storage problem. It is something I have been trying to work wit for a while. I
also have a trailer I am not completely happy with. I understand there is a company in
Clearwater (where the Hutchins Yacht Company is) that makes custom trailers for Compacs. I
have not looked into this as of yet. I will be getting ba k in touch with you because I
feel like I am a running back follwing my blocker. You seem to be doing all the work and I
get all the benefits! Thanks for your dedication and information. Mike

Very interesting and informative site. I had actually seen your information prior to this
site being created. Most helpful were your calculations and trials and tribulations with
electric trolling motors. I have gone that route too. but don't believe it s the ultimate
solution. I am now attempting to resurrect an 1944 Sears Elgin 2HP outboard I have had for
many years.
Thanks for an excellent site. I sail an 18' trailer sailer in Chichester Harbour and
the Solent, UK, an area with some similarities (lots of mud and strong tidal streams).
I've learnt a lot from your experiences and found the modifications very useful (the
tiller tamer particularly has transformed my single-handed sailing). Fair winds and happy
sailing!

Thank you for putting together this web page. I have been undergowing the same process
as yourself in search of a sailboat that will meet all of my needs: Sailing in local area
lakes as well as the Great Lakes. I have been sailing for the past 3 years actively,
having gained my chartering certificate from Sail Boats, Inc., and chartering on Lake
Superior. I also own an 18' Chrysler Buccaneer which I trailor. I have been in search of a
boat which I can moor out on the lake, trailor to other lakes, and potentially sail on
Superior. I also want a more stable boat than the Buccaneer for taking out family and
friends, and for spending entire days or weekends on. The shoal keel is my first choice
because of its shallow draft and lack of mechanical complications. I also have many of the
same qualifications that you have, with weight limits of 3000 lbs dry displacement and
width of 8'. The two boats that I have narrowed to have been the Compac 19/3 and the
Sovereign 20. I was particularly interested in the Sovereign 20. Unfortunately they are
out of production. I have also considered the Compaq 23/3. But, am put off by the
increased difficulty of launch and retrieval. (Like you, I intend to do a certain amount
of solo sailing. It is my intention to make my purchase for delivery Spring of 1999.
Again, thank you for putting together your web page. TM

Read your comments on electrical propulshion. I am going to install a 52# thrust
Minnekota and a single 12v battery. I'll 'rassle the battery on and off to charge it. My
boat is a Venture 21 and weighs, according to the manuf. 1,200# I think the trolling motor
will work as well as my 4 horse Chrysler. A sales person told me I could count on 1 hp per
10-12#s of thrust, so at 52# I will have about the same motive power as the outboard.
