Basic Gear List
This list is a response to conversations that were held on the trail about what is necessary for one to enjoy a hike. This list is from several sources that all arrive at the same essentials. Always tell someone else where you are going.
Boots with Vibram soled - for the best grip in variable trail conditions & bushwhacking. Runners are not acceptable.
Day pack – lightweight pack that will carry the basic essentials listed below
WATER Two litres (2L.) Dehydration causes muscle weakness and confusion
Food – something lightweight but nutritious, high in carbohydrates
Extra clothing – at least take one of those disposable ponchos and a Mylar blanket. Even in our desert areas we can get drenched in rain. Snow and wind can quickly chill you on a lunch break in the mountains so; bring toque, sweater, windbreaker and gloves. Include at least one bright coloured article of clothing.
Lighter or waterproof matches – keeps you warm at night. Someday something will happen and someone will spend the night out there.
First Aid Kit – keep it simple, when you need it you’ll be glad you brought it.
Flashlight – this could be the difference between spending the night beside a trail waiting for enough light to get down and getting down to your own warm bed.
Whistle – used for signalling.
One toot = Where are you? Two toots = Here I am. Three toots = Help
Sunscreen & a light shirt & long pants give excellent UV protection from the sun.
