As you can tell, I enjoy the Wyoming prairie! These are a few of many bucks I've outsmarted the past few years in southcentral Wyoming. This is usually the first hunt of the season and I'm ready to get out my the spotting scope and start glassing. It is not uncommon to view 40 to 50 bucks a day. It always pays to scope things out a couple days before the season and I usually punch my tag on opening morning.
I've only hunted Colorado pronghorns a couple times. After viewing many 11 to 14" bucks near Craig I stumbled upon this crazy looking buck. He looked more like a shorthorn steer than a pronghorn. I decided I'd rather harvest a freak rather than just another ordinary 14-15" buck, so lowered the boom. There must be some weird genetics running around in this boy's crowd!
A couple years ago my buddy and I invited a Texas hunter along to match wits with his first antelope. He had a blast. One morning we called in a coyote after hearing him howling the evening before. Coyotes seem to overrun this ranch and I've counted as many as a dozen in a day while scouting. No wonder fawn recruitment has struggled the past 10 years! The Texas hunter harvested a dandy buck after several unsuccessful stalks. He discovered the hard way that "speed-goats" have terrific vision!
This is the oldest buck I've seen harvested on the ranch. My buddy harvested him at 200 yards with his 257 JDJ pistol after making a fantastic stalk. The buck had one frost-bitten ear and hardly anything left of his teeth. I wonder how many winters this ole guy lived? Jim has harvested several bucks over the years with different pistols and bow.
