Whanganui
River Easter 98
Well my camera, canoes and playing submarines
don't mix... These photo's taken by CC of
our '98 Easter trip were all that survived.....
So without further to-do .... The
unlikely lads vs. the Whanganui River.

The Obligatory starting shot.
Whakahoro. Everybody knows how to drive kayaks and Canadian canoes.. yeah
right. So off down the river we go until the first rapid. Kayaks shooting
rapids backwards, sideways and upside down. We just wont mention to the kids
that there's another 100 K's of this. LOL.

Driving a well packed light
Canadian canoe requires few skills. Minor effort to keep the front pointing
downstream and a little bit of co-ordination to stop the back overtaking the
front. Oh yeah and communication. The communication on the first rapid was
something like this.

Extract
from the Whanganui river guide
"105 Whakatara:
Shingle LB. Snags accumulate RB with the current setting strongly into
them. Enter left of center and keep to the left of the main
current." |

Bowman (thinking to
himself " we have another 100 odd rapids i hope we don't have a
serious falling out")

Sternperson (thinking to
himself "I got wet too,, what's he so upset about")

However the basic principal as
demonstrated by Paul is just to follow the boat in front.

First Break. Some of the lads in a
thoughtful mood. i.e. Kayaking is hard work and we've got three more days of
this !!!
We set up camp late on day 1.
Everybody as tired and as sore as....Only to find that CC had forgotten the
SUGAR !!!!. However much to CC's credit he did manage to bludge some sugar the
next morning. So many thanks to the hut wardens at John Coull Hut. They
undoubtedly saved CC from a long slow lingering death.
