A truly spectacular scene. This 28 meter high limestone arch that spans the mangapohue stream is all that remains of an ancient cave system. A loop track takes you through the bridge and past fossil oysters 30 million years old.

Mangapohue Natural Bridge

When is a stalactite not a stalactite ? Well in the picture below there are no stalactites !! These "stalactites" are in fact known as "entropic speleotherms" (oops I may have they words muddled). Because this cave was open to daylight mosses and algae grew on the roof. The calcification of these algae's form's "stalactites" incorporating the algae thus these are not true stals. Impressive never the less.
