What Is Trolling? |
Trolling is just another technic used for catching mid-water pelagic and swift moving fishes by means of trailing the artificial lure or live bait behind a moving boat (Also used in rivers and lakes). The speed of the boat varies by the type of fish you are going for but usually range from 2 - 8 knots. The most obvious difference with other kind of fishing technics is the gears used.
Trolling gears should be able to take the massive strain from the resistance of the bait or lure in the water at high speed. Rods used for trolling should range around 5 - 6 feet. Below is a table of the rod classification prescription by IGFA.
Category |
Rod Strength in Pounds |
Ultra-Light | 20 lb or below |
Light | 30 lb or below |
Medium | 50 lb or below |
Heavy | 80 lb or below |
Ultra-Heavy | 130 lb or below |
Unlimited | over 130 lb |
The reel should be a multiplier type that holds at least 250 metres 30 lb line. This kind of multiplier reels which are meant for trolling usually do not have line guides unless those for ultra-light trolling and has a low retrieval speed. Line guides could cause the line to break from friction as a result from a hookup on a large fish.
Using wire traces / leaders are most important as to overcome the strain from the attacking fish and the sharp jaws of the pelagic species. These trace / leaders should be at least 3/4 of the length of the kind of fish you are targeting on.
