The cost has always been an important issue in most activity but sports fishing has no minimum or fixed cost to it. Sports fishing could be very expensive and very cheap as well, all depending on the type of fishing you are looking at. Basically, fresh water or inland fishing wouldn't cost much but sea fishing on the other hand, would cost a little more due to the distance which are normally much further and the rentals of the boat. Much of the cost of sea fishing depends on the type of boat which you are going to hire and the number of anglers. You could go on a 24 hours sea fishing trip for four person for as low as RM100 each person on a local wooden fishing boat or RM1,000 each for two on a high tech vessel. Whatever the situation is, the choice is yours to fit in your budget.
Mostly, the cost in fishing lies on the gears you would need. Many beginners waste hundreds of $$$ buying the wrong gears that they do not need or just by getting the most expensive ones just because they are expensive and assuming it to be the best one available. They are many RM100 reels that serves as well as those costing over RM1,000 for example. This depends on the type of fish you are going for. Most of the different fishes require different types of gears, based on the fact of the size, strength and the surrounding environment. An all round angler would normally have at least five sets of gears, all for different areas.
It is wise to check with the tackle shop you are going to by asking them for advises for the kind of fishing you are going for. Browse through from the cheap to the expensive ones and ask them on the differences if you are unsure. Go around to other shops to look at other brands and prices before you purchase one. If you know a friend that is using the rod or reel you are going to buy, get them to lend it to you to try it out first. Choosing the gear also relies on the preference of the person.
