(In and around Malaysia)

Other Good Tips To Remember

Checklist  -  Be prepared, use a checklist of all the items in you tackle box so that you can make sure that you have all you need in it before a trip or to replenish it.

Hooks  -  Make sure your hooks are sharp and if it is not, use a sharpening stone to softly sharpen it by sliding from the direction of the bend to the point. Do not reverse the direction as it will cause the point to blunt. Check by scratching your fingernail with it and see if it leaves a mark.

Polarised Sunglasses  -  Use sunglasses if you are fishing on a hot sunny day. This will protect your eyes from the glare and harmful ray reflected from the water. This will also give you better visibility of the fishes around.

Drag  -  If you do not have a trip planned soon and will be storing your reel for some time, then remember to loosen the drag so that it will not get compressed and turn sticky. If you drag becomes sticky, do not attempt to add oil to it as this will make it worse. Instead just wash it out with some mild soap or just wipe it with a clean cloth.

Rod  -  Do not leave your rod across the path as someone might just trip over it and break the rod. Leave it leaning vertically on a rail, wall or tree.

Reel  -  Try to flush down your reel with clean fresh water after fishing as soon as possible. This is to get rid of the sand or saltwater that could damage your reel.

Netting  -  Always net a fish head first as almost all fishes can't swim backwards. If you are helping someone to net a fish, just place the net in the water facing the fish and let the angler who is fighting maneuver it to the net.

Line  -  Always check the condition of your line for deformations and scratches. Do this by sliding it between your fingers. Ignoring this most likely mean going back empty handed.

Line  -  Monofilament lines will stretch when it is pulled and will regain its actual length after a certain time, just as when you are fighting a fish. So it is wise to cast out your line and re-reel it in after a fight to loosen the tension to avoid the monofilament line from deforming or cracking your spool when it return to the original length.

Log Book  -  It it a good practise to record your expeditions in detail such as the date, time, weather, water condition and type of bait used as it will give you a better idea of how to improve yourself and your catch.

Torch  -  Always bring a torchlight when fishing at night. It will not only help you see in the dark but will also let other find you easier if you become lost.
