Baiting

Now, the next thing you will need to learn after the knots, the rig and the bait is how to properly hook your bait. The key in baiting is to make it look as natural as you can and ensuring maximum hookup. Making it natural is to immitate the bait's natural movement as in the wild and ensuring maximum hookup by making sure your hook gets out from your bait itself when you strike.

Read the note for each of the knots or rigs for the correct application.

Dead Baits / Part or Whole

fillet

Sliced/fillet of fish or squid can be used. Running the leader in and out the bait helps to hold it in position and making it last longer.

<----- fish this way

This illustration is mainly for baiting a fish. Two hooks can be used here with the second hook near the tail. It is important to make a simple knot at the tail to keep is aligned with your mainline but not required if second hook is used.

fish this way ---->

This is basically the same as the ealier technic but this with the fish on the reverse. It is required to tied the mouth end of the fish and the mainline to prevent the mouth from opening and creating a lot of resistents from the flowing current, thus preventing the bait from tearing off from the leader. Tying to the mainline keeps the fish aligned with the mainline.

Frog

Used for frogs, lizards, etc... Mainly for freshwater fishing for haruan and toman. The use of a large snap clip is required to hold the bait.

Live Baits

Fish

Baiting a live fish this way (shoulder) helps keep it alive for a longer period of time.

Prawn

Many ways of baiting a live prawn can be seen around but I have found this the best way to keep it alive longer.

Can be baited with one of few worms and a sliced shank is used to prevent the worm from slipping of the hook.
