POPULATION

The population of Barachois comprises:Scotch, French, Irish and English as well as Channel Islanders.

The family names of Bond, Element, Francis, Tapp, Coombs are of English origin; those of Maloney, McNalley, Henley and Boyle are Irish. The McCallums, McGregors, Thompsons, Waughs and Ross are Scotch.

The names of Trudel, Prevost, Thibeault, Laflamme, Quirion, Asselin, Chicoyne, Methot, Michel, Lemieux, Blodin, Dion are of French descent. The Rehels which are the most numerous of any, according to the latest census are disputed between the French and Belgian; so goes for the Roussels. The Bacons could be of English ancestry as some claim to be, likewise the name Hammond. The Lawrences claim to be Irish. The name Paulmert which is rare in Canada is listed as that of German origin. Collin and Cotton in other parts of the world are English or Irish, but here they are definatly of French descent. Ste. Croix, Vibert, Lemesurier, Hotton, Legresley, Gerard, Devouge are all descendants of the Jersey Islanders.

It would be too long to list the other names which are difficult to establish as to their ancestry, but anong them are some of the best parishoners who enjoy the same as the others mentioned. All nationalities have proven themselves a versitile tolerant, friendly people.

Creed nor language never mattered when problems of general interest arose. In her book, "Gaspe Land of Romance and History", B.Davis, pays tribute to those and I quote those words so agreably ringing in the ears of departing tourist from Barachois:"Won't you come back again"?
