In April, 1999, a group of Mountaineers singles from Seattle took the ferry and drove to Dosewallips State Park near Brinnon on the Hood Canal to participate in the park's annual Shellfish Shindig. The site was magnificent: snow capped Olympic Mountains to our backs and a salt water extension of Puget Sound in front of us. Park rangers and old hands in this activity explained how to dig for clams and shuck oysters. The famous Washington State oysters literally lay at our feet for the picking. Most of us harvested our limit of 18 oysters, which had to be shucked on the spot because baby oysters grew on the shells, and 40 clams. At the end of the day we cranked up the Colemans and feasted on steamed and fried oysters and steamed clams before heading back home.
