France's World Cup Victory Celebration

July 12 - 13, 1998

The Palais de Chaillot was one of the five sites in Paris where huge screens had been set up so soccer fans could watch the World Cup matches. When France scored its third goal against Brazil everyone knew it was over. The nearby Metro station had been closed so tens of thousands of us walked along Avenue Kléber to the Arc de Triomphe where we joined a crowd of one million celebrants. It was France's happiest day since the liberation of Paris in 1944.
