Greenlough 1-10 Drumsurn 2-11
A goal two minutes into added time by Adrian Mc Callion, merely put a better look on the scoreboard for Greenlough, but couldn't disguise the fact that the Clady side have slipped a long way down the ladder since their consistent form of last year.
They trailed by a point at half time, 1-04 to 0-6, but were throughly outplayed after the break as Drumsurn steadly built up a seven point lead before Greenlough's late strike.
The impressive Michael Cole and Damien Canning dominated midfield against Garrett O'Neill and Stephen Lynn. Not only did they win the ball consistently, but they also used it wll. They also added 0-3 between them.
With the supply coming at a trickle for long periods, the Greenlough attack struggled to make an impression. Rory Mc Glinchy pulled off four excellent points while corner forward Leo Madden landed three frees in his six points haul. Eunan McGilligan was in trouble in the opening quarter at corner back and was quickly replaced by Ireland U-17 International Colm Feeny.
Really, Greenlough were firing only on two cylinders in front of a struggling midfield. Moore and McGilligan were very solid through the centre, while former Derry player Eunan Rafferty brok eup several promising attacks.
Up front the evergreen Joe Iwrin and Kevin Friel may have only contributed 0-1 between them, but they were involved in nearly everything that happened inthe Drumsurn attack. Morre picked up two excellent goals, while Woods, Mullan and Ferris all made significant contributions to the victory. Adrian O'Neill tried hard to keep Drumsurn at bay, but it was a finger in the dkye situation as Drumsurn were vastly superior to Greenlough.
Experience is vital at this level and Drumsurn had it in abundance in Joe Irwin, Eunan Rafferty and Seamus Mullan. there was little that Greenlugh manager Joe Marron could do. His charges seemed to have lost their appetite for the game. Maybe the early season upheaval had taken its toll. Drumsurn were fer sharper in all aspects of play. They wanted to win badly, and Canning and Coll provided the platform at midfield for a deserved victory.
Full back Lynn conceded an early 45. Irwin played it shoet to Gary Moore, took the return and pointed. In the thrid minute a fisted pass by Friel released Seamus Mullan and he pointed for a 0-2 to 0-0 lead.
Leo Madden go t Greenlough on the scoreboard with a point and then Rory McGlinchy levelled in the 5th minute when he collected a 45 from Garrett O'Neill and pointed. Aiden McPeake had a chance to put the Clady side ahead, but he dropped his shot into the arms of keeper Ferris.
Mullan pur Coll away, but his shot was well deflected by a defender. Mullan then lobbed an effort into the keepers handsas Drumsurn began to up the tempo. However the Clady side weathered the storm and forced McGuigan into a good block and keeper Ferris into a good save. Ehan Madden was fouled, the corner forward put his side 0-3 to 0-2 ahead. By the 12 minute the lead was 2 points, Madden scoring after a pass from an O'Neill free.
Drumsurn brought on Colm Feeney for corner back Eunan mc Gilligan. Canning missed a chance, but Ferris pointed a free after midfielder Lynn was yellow-carded for a foul on Moore.
Ten minutes from the interval Irwin and Mullan twice combiened before wing-forward Woods got his fist to Mullans cross to send it over the bar for the equalising score. McGlinchey then scored a lovely point to restore Greenlough's lead, Paul O'Neill missing a chance to extend it before a point by Madden put Greenlough 0--6 to 0-4 ahead.
Two minutes later Woods crossed to teh goalmouth and Gary Moore fisted the ball to the net. In the final minutes of the half, each side missed gilt-edged scoring chances, Madden and Mullan sending 20 metre frees past the post.
Donal Madden and Gary Woods exchanged early wides before Ferris pointed a free when Coll was heald after a great pass from Friel.
Greenlough had an inspiritional score from Garrett O'Neill in the 5th minute when he struck a 45 firmly between the posts after Madden had forced keeper Ferris to fist the ball over the end line.
However, it was Canning who were lifted by that score. From the kickout Canning won the ball and pointed. The Madden broke clear but sent his shot against the woodwork with McCallion all alone inside the defence.
Friel was held and Mullan pointed the 30 metre free. Moore was then held and Ferris scored to put Drumsurn four points clear. The Greenlough keeper McDonnell made two sharp saves in the goal mouth. A strong run by Coll opened up the Greenlough defence but he was fouled as he shot and Ferris landed the 20 metre free.
Midway through the half, McGlinchy narrowed the gap but Drumsurn were now in teh pursuit of victory. At the end of a flowing move, Joe Iwrin put Mullan through but his shot was magnificently parried by McDonnell. The latter had no chance moments later had no chance moments later when Moore took a pass from Friel to net. Coll added a point to put Drumsurn eight points clear with ten minutes to go.
Joe Irwin chipped a 45 against a post, Leo Madden yellow-carded for dissent. Madden the converted a free when Rafferty was penalised. McDonnell fisted a dangerous cross from Refferty for a 45, but full back Lynn expertly fielded Irwin's free.
Three minutes from time, Madden pointed a free, Coll taking a pass from Irwin to respond. In added time McCallion scored a consolation goal, but Drumsurn had the game well won by that stage.
