Nymph, Dream and Emerald Lakes

These beautiful lakes are nestled in the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park, only a short hike away from Bear Lake. Probably some of the prettiest lakes I have ever seen, they are truly spectacular.

Leaving the ranger station at Bear Lake, you soon come upon little Nymph Lake. It is the smallest of the three lakes, and in the summer time, it can become completely covered by lilly pads. There were a couple floating around on our trip, but no where near covered. Long's Peak from Nymph Lake The views to Long's Peak in the distance are great, about the best up close you can find. The only other time that Long's looked this great is when Nancy and I climbed it!

Leaving Nymph Lake, hike around its edge and only a short distance to Dream Lake. I would have liked to have gone to Lake Haiyaha too, but it was still covered with snow, at least the trail was. Dream Lake is the best one of the three (my opinion). It is definately very long and not wide at all. The views back to Hallett and Flattop mountains are as great as the ones to Long's from Nymph Lake. Dream Lake and Hallett Peak The trail from Dream Lake can be a bit confusing if you have never traveled that way before. It goes all the way around the north side of the lake, don't be tempted to take some of the other trails you see leaving that one. There are a couple that go up the slope around the lake, and they don't lead anywhere.

Continue past Dream Lake and follow the trail a short distance to Emerald Lake. This lake sits in the basin formed by the Tyndall Glacier. The was still quite a bit of snow around the lake, and we really didn't venture too close to it. We sat on the rocks about and had a nice peaceful lunch until the chipmunks started harassing us for food. Please, do me a favor in the future, when you see these cute little creatures, don't feed them. We are all guilty of it, including me, but then they always beg people for food.

Anyway, the views to Emerald Lake are great from the rocks, and Hallett Peak looms large in the distance. The total trip was easy, and it fit our plans perfectly. We went along with some friends, and we all just wanted a nice peaceful day. We originally were planning to go to Bierstadt Lake, but Guy had been to Dream Lake before and said it was a nice hike, so we did the loop. I will definately do some more hikes around RMNP in the future.

Along with me on the hike: Nancy, Guy and Andrea

Total Round Trip Time: 4 hours (WE RELAXED!!)
