This is the youngest style of dance. It's birthplace was up north to entertain tourists and for competition purposes. Having only been around since the early 1950's, it has only become popular nation wide in the 1970's and '80's. Whereas all other forms of women's dancing are more serene and gentle, this style allows the women the opportunity to exhibit a form of free expression. This dance resembles the butterfly, with the dancers jumping and spinning around on the balls of their feet in time with the drum. Whilst the dance is quite athletic the movements of this dance still carry an air of grace. The regalia is made from light material so it appears the dancers are flying. Shawls are worn on the shoulder being held out by each hand so as to further enhance the image of flight. Emphasis is paid particularly to the shawls, with elaborate designs, applique, ribbonwork, and painting. Long fringe hangs from the edges of the shawl, and flies round as the dancer sallies forth. |
