The Grass Dance is a very old dance which has been popular for a very long time. The history behind the Grass Dance dates back to the days of rolling grassy plains where, prior to use, an area of grass was prepared for a meeting place or pow wow. It involved flattening the grass in a certain way through special movements reflecting such things as fighting an enemy and stalking game. Originally, Grass Dance was first performed in the north, but as popularity has spread south and is now available to all. This beautiful dance reflects the need for balance in life with movements performed in equal amounts to both right and left. Some people also talk of this dance as a gift from the Creator to celebrate joy and surrounding this is rich lore. A Grass Dancer's regalia usually comprises of a roach, spreader and a beaded headband. The main difference in Grass Dancers is optional "antennae", which are long thin wires with fluffs or feathers attached to them. The are attached so they rock or twirl as the dancer moves. Long strands of yarn, ribbon or fabric are attached to a base outfit to represent grass. Multicolored designs are popular but the latest trend is all white with colored highlights. A matching apron to the cape is worn to cover the waist, often with fringe side tabs.
