Alaska has been on my list of dream destinations for a long time. I finally got the chance to make the trip as I boarded an Alaska Airlines flight for Anchorage. I was told of the grand mountains, wild beauty and endless summer days. And indeed, my trip coincided with the summer soltice, Friday, June 21, 2002. The sun would set around midnight (never actually saw it set... I'm not a night owl!) and rise around 4AM (not that early a riser!) and the "night" time is really a mix of dusk and dawn where it never gets completely dark.

Friday night at the Anchorage Museum of Art and History while we were having our pre-marathon pasta dinner, a wedding rehersal broke out.

After dinner, we decided to take a drive to the city overlook at the Chugash State Park. And you guessed it, we found an actual wedding. This picture is around 9pm in the evening and the overlook was busy with hikers who wanted to have some fun on the longest day of the year.

Here I am with the vast and beautiful Alaska behind me!

Travel tip

In some of the travel brouchures, there are ads for an Alaska movie on a big screen. Unfortunately, the film was shot in the 1980s and it shows! The film color is faded and the narration soporific. So if you need a nap, then go see. As an added bonus to the snooze, you ticket gives you a discount in the gift shop. Otherwise, go ahead and skip the film.
