On one of the days in London, we took a boat to Greenwich.
We went underneath the Tower Bridge.
Here I am at the Royal Observatory standing on the Prime
Meridian!!
Don't overlook this museum. It is the Imperial War Museum
located near tube stop at Lambeth North or Elephant &
Castle.
The church is St. Martin-in-the-Fields. After a wonderful wander in the National Gallery (no photography allowed),
we wandered into St. Martins just in time to catch a concert.
Its free but donation is requested.
More pictures to come but a moment to "plug" the two companies
that put out the tour guidebooks I used:
Let's Go and
Frommer's.
From these books, I assembled our 6 day itinerary:
*** Day One ***
Took tube to Picadilly Circus. The Underground is GREAT! Mind the gap!
Found Chinatown -- we had dinner here several times
Walked down to Whitehall to see these notible sites:
10 Downing Street, Cabinet War Rooms, Big Ben, Parliment and
Westminister Abby.
*** Day Two ***
Took Bus tour from "Original London Sightseeing." You can hop on and hop off at a number of locales. Guide points out sights and shares history about the city. Very informative and a quick way to see a little bit of everything. We took extended stops at St. Paul's and Harrods. At St. Paul's take the winding stairs to the top of the spire for an incredible view of London.
For the evening, saw Les Miserables at Palace Theatre at Shaftsbury and Charring Cross. Lots of great theatre in London!
And a bargain compared to prices in the USA.
*** Day Three ***
Took boat to Greenwich. Again guide gives wonderful narration about sights and history along the Thames.
Wish we had more time to wander in Greenwich but did see the
Royal Observatory. It is now a museum. Today, active work of the Royal Observatory takes place at Cambridge.
Took the foot tunnel under the Thames to catch the Docklands
Light Rail back to London where we found out a couple
of riots broke out!! For the rest of the day and into the evening, we wound up staying in the hotel
room watching it all on SkyNews (England's CNN-like station).
*** Day Four ***
A very relaxing day. Saw the tulips in bloom at Buckingham Palace. Then walked across the bridge to get to the Imperial War Museum. Then went back across the Thames to see the runners of the London Marathon. Way to go MS on finishing the marathon!!
*** Day Five ***
Morning at the National Gallery. Wow, what an art museum and terrific docent tour! Noontime concert at St. Martin-in-the-field. Then an afternoon at the British Museum. Since at one time the British empire spanned the globe, they collected (stole) a lot of stuff from all over. We merely scratched the surface by seeing the ancient Middle East, Asian and manuscript sections.
*** Day Six ***
Bus trip to Oxford. Once outside of London, you see green country side with cows and sheep. We took a walking tour as the guides can show off the inside of a few of the colleges at Oxford.
There were other day trips I considered: Windsor (the castle), Bath (Roman baths), Cambridge (Oxford's rival) and Stratford-Upon-Avon (Shakespeare's home town). Just have to go back one of these days!
Got back to London and caught Evansong at St. Paul and then watched the sun go down from Waterloo Bridge... the next day had to board a 777 back to the USA
