As time goes along I'll fill in this section...

11 mile run this morning with Diana... helped me come down from the overly busy day yesterday of the Cascabel trip... bought two lots for the trust to develop the retreat out there... then sold A unit... and played with getting the next phase of remodel projects going... ...Jeannie Haney worked with Tom Veto today on C unit plastering... Michael down and dirty in the grotto... Darien...?...computing and eating... me, well I was on the computer all afternoon and did very little. It's going to make for a harder/busier weekend.
We do the doodahs bent in the morning... Nina at 1pm... hopefully I'll manage a bit of house cleaning to get ready for the house share before too much distraction hits.
Pleasant having the increasing flow of interaction
here on the compound that the houseshare seems to
generate... nice to have Jeannie back amoung our
midst.
...planned mountain bike ride out at
Cascabel for Monday... Darien doing the
sandhog...Tom/me on dirt... Michael sighting
lots...
(letters: Jeannie/Nina/Carolyn/Darien/Susan/Anne)

Doodah ride was fun... Michael, his brother in law, and Lou joined me on 'bents, and everyone did reasonably well in the winds and hills... cooool morning though. Now, it's a lazy day with everyone napping or thinking about it... later... Nina and me out to Cascabel.
Oct 18, 1998
Missed Tumacocari for the first time in three years, everyone still a bit off center... and I may have broken that toe again! Tom-Kathi-me out m. biking it at Saguaro East... then kathi-Brendon-me off to Antique Fair at the park. Tom off to Jeannies. Kathi-me to the store and a movie... then home for more cleanup. Easy day.(letters: Nina)
Oct 19, 1998
Tom, Michael, Darien, me out early to Cascabel... Darien on the hardtail...me sandhogging... the wash drifts back two miles before hitting private fence (573-1679)... potentials look good for trails drifting there and here. Drive back over Redington was a route not to repeat too often. more and more there and there look nicer/nicer...
Oct 21, 1998
Yesterday... a while ago now it seems... these days are getting longer with all of those late night computer WebPage sessions...
Darien and I to the club... after we did a nice, brisk up to the cave on Finger Rock with a good final run in the flat. He hit the machines while I hit the river for seven miles with Diana. Brendon playing with ducks... Michael in the hole... Tom to the airport. Kathi around. today...rain early, made a later start on the bike with kara, but not a bad loop through the park for our first "getting ready" ride. Just a month left! 14%/193 yesterday...12.5%/192 today... heading for 8%/174? we'll see... todays forty miles is not enough...I need another good hour of aerobic to get over the edge... make it up tomorrow...?
Michael working on the Cascabel details... and we're talking about "cat-ing" around for a month out there. It's hard not to let the focus drift over to the potentials.
...later...."hard day's journey..." with Diana and home early. I'm tired, but good.
Oct 21, 1998
...lota moving about... Circuit City (printer/ keyboard), Price Club ('nother flat for Darien), Bank, and moved to upgraded Geocities! No more banners! ...never made the club, so that better be a good run in the morning! Webpage feeling better-maybe we're getting there. giving Kathi and Michael there own to play with. Our new address: Geocities.com/~hikbikrun... need to decide if I want to activate la escuela.com...? Rain! hard Rain!
Oct 23,1998
...did I miss yesterday? odd? humm...I think it was a misdated entry! Today was about projects: Darien and Jeannie on the tile, me on cooking and cleaning and more damn organizing, Michael in the hole. Set up Michael's Cascabel site... paid bills!...hard money lenders for Ed.. read... chicken and really good mashed potatoes!... Diana to the club for hard and hard again, added in the Cybex after an hour and a half of aerobic... then topped it off with 235lb leg presses -deep hits. a beer and home to da food! Tired! Sore tomorrow! Nice talks with Michael late then drafted my schedule for November. 11pm and wide awake...
letters: (tom, nina, virg, darien) Big weekend coming up... ride tandem with Susan tomorrow... Nina to dance recital/dinner/home... Sunday 'bent, then brunch... so much to do, so little time...
Oct 26, 1998
Wow, that Friday hard workout! Still feeling some of it this morning... 'course still feeling yesterdays champagne, too. Doodah with Susan was good...a little extra up Swan with Sue... very tired for the Dance thing, passed out with Nina. The early Bent ride came off: eleven riders...have to give all that some thought. Arizona Inn Brunch-very nice but too much bubbly! Sore, tired, fuzzy headed, lots of food, but a good time had by all. Now, I'm I supposed to ride today?? Kara!
later...not a ba ride... nailed a quart of choc milk on the way over, and that turned the fuzzies around. Kara will do okay.
New project schedule: fence, Spooky Wall, loft deck and a bit on the roof leaks... not many hours but good progress. Michael and kathi got the gourds! Pumpkin mania! Round the day out with an easy run then maybe a late run...
...those runs went well... that second one was late, with Kathi... finished around 11pm!
...then awake at 4am for the bike ride up to finger rock trail... rode bent and did okay. Met Rochelle for the start of the hike, then Darien and I went up to the finger. Home then club... now very tired. Schedueled to ride with Shelley tomorrow. Busy, busy...tired, tired.
Oct28'98
that was a day...! ...Shelley's car broke down... Chris called from Texas (comng out tomorrow!), Shelley moving in... all sorts of crazy. did hit some deck work early...good thing... no exercise, yet but might go out with Kathi later. Tomorrow could be nutsier!
Oct 30,1998
Yesterday was busy... Shelley moved in, Chris and Gabe moved in...not too much project done, but Michael and Darien did knock off the pit! Light workout set me up for a nice three hour 15 miler this morning. It was hard. It was easy. I don't know what to think about the marathon, much less the upcoming 50... ?
Nov 1. 1998
I thought the 15 miler (and the up 'till midnight pumpkin carving evening of eating pizza... lots of pizza...!) would have pretty much taken me out on the Oracle 10K... but, it went well. Hilly! Big time hills, but great cool morning and exceptional scenery made for pure fun. Diana may have had a slightly different perspective (she's sore today) but she ran twice as hard as I did. I still do not seem to have the capacity to hit things hard... I just do my pace and that's it. Yesterday that pace was slightly sub nine minute miles. I'm pleased on that up/down course.
More carving with a smaller, quieter, group last night...everyone home early, but still midnight before cleanup and sleep. Missed Nina. No sore today?! Odd.
Nov 3, 1998
Hit the road on the bent with Michael Sunday, Vail and back...Great!! a club workout after and still feeling good...? Mondays run drug a bit... Finger rock today a bit slower, but enjoyed Shelley's company... Darien moved up2 down1... not bad... projects all paper today! More fun on the morrow...
N0v 4-98
Kara/Shelley be bikin'... then lots of work round da place: Michael-Chris'Shelley-Darien-myself all doin dis n dat... lookin good! Signed in/up for El Tour.
Nov 6, 1998
..offline most of yesterday..learned a bit more than I care to know about webtv, but okay. Jeannie, Claud, Darien, Chris working in the yard (adobe, duck pond) ad Shelley doing general cleanup...Michael doing tunnel tops... me, nothin'...
November 9, 1998
Now that was a weekend!!
Darien knocked off three centuries in a row... Michael rode his first century (on his 'bent) and I somehow managed to finish first in the fifty miler! I rounded out with a second fifty miler on Sunday... that one on the 'bent bike. The Desert Challenge fifty mile run was very interesting! first time/last time...
11-10-98
Rested yesterday... club workout today completely has me feeling fully recovered ('cept for some dying toenails)... I'll target the marathon now, with some hope of running just below a 9 minute pace (?)... that would be what, nearly seven miles an hour which would finish me in under four hours. time will tell.
11-11-98
...good ride with kara....shelley and virg disappeared... nice weather, good flow...Alex deGrazzi on guitar tonight... feels nice
11-12-98
Easy club workout... good nights rest... scale at 191/16... a bit odd considering feel and fit is 184. I'm not sure what this indicates, but I'll move for the 176/9 and see just what that will give me... other than shaved legs!
11/16/98
Saturday was a mellow day and a great swap meet... Fridays run beat my legs up good... along with the Thrsday/Friday projects (salvage!) I was tired and sore for Saturday. Sunday: bent and tandem for 60+ miles with plans for the same tomorrow. Less than a week 'till El Tour! Not ready!! Oh well... it'll be fun.
11-21-98
Another El Tour come and gone... and perfect weather again. This year it was me and Kara at 6:58... Darien and Kurt at 4:45. Michael at 7:20 and a bunch of DooDahs at 6:30. Susan was around 8 hours.
The week was busy... we rode last Sunday around 80 miles on the recumbent... then out Monday for another 90 on tandem. A very good 5 mile Monday night run. Tuesday a club workout, Wednesday back out on the Tandem for sixty miles. Thursday and Friday were hectic but easy (out to Cascabel and driving with Shelley... to Rent with Nina)... no sleep before the ride, but it made little difference. Lay around day on Sunday. Monday I'll start the running/hiking schedule that will run through March. I think it will be simple:
Monday: long, slow ride... evening run (6 hours)
Tuesday: morning hike... evening club (4+ hours)
Wednesday: morning run, easy bike ride (4+ hours)
Thursday: evening club (2 hours)
Friday: long morning run (2-3 hours)**
Saturday: Doodah ride (3 hours)
Sunday: Long hike (10 hours)**
... a bit over 30 hours weekly of exercise, with two real breakdown sessions (**) each week.
November 27, 1998
I sort of forgot that the new schedule starts after next weeks marathon... this week is broken up with the Holiday and prep getting set for the marathon. Nice hard Sabino Canyon run with Carolyn yesterday, unfortunately left me with glitched leg muscle, so no 20 mile run today... I guess I'd better get ready for a hard day on my first marathon.
Lot of tunnel work in progress... Darien and Michael and me... Brendon playing with ducks. Should be fun!!
DECEMBER 8, 1998
...BUSY week... Cascabel Fair with Nina and Michael very good... ran into Diana and the girls... met the locals... nice people.
Yesterday started the new series of workouts... nice bike ride to Vail with Michael and Darien... run with Joe, Darien and Jeannie... hike this morning with Darien. I think I'm in line for a reasonable chance to complete the 50 mile Finger rock hike and the Western States 100. Darien's going for an improved Death ride. I'm looking forward to the training. Concrete truck coming this week. Projects!!!
December 20, 1998
Busy few weeks, but not yet on track with the weekly flow. Michael and Michael doing the 4am Monday rides. Cascabel work weekend great! We have a two bedroom, kitchen/den, dining nook, and mud room all headed for wrap around window exposure with mountain views. We mixed and set 175 bags of concrete and four cords of mesquite wood! Diana was impressive. Jeannie showed to work for awhile.... weather was the best. More to come...
1/20/99
Another Cascabel weekend come and gone... we have a roof over the building and a flush toilet! Mike and Michael were joined by Diana (for one day) and enjoyed a steady focus of lifting, mixing and hammering. Great weather helped. Michael V opened up the weekend by riding his bike out to I-10... a nice 2am ride start. Possibly a pattern to be continued (with maybe Mike dropping off the truck at the end of the paved road and running on in... Michael to ride on to the truck and finishing the drive in??)
The running/pasta meal is picking up a bit... Bob and Claire... Jeannie and Sally... and the usuals. Darien is adding an hour a week on to his run, targeting a five hour sand run. The goal is the Mohican 100 in June over in Ohio... we'll see. There may be a 50 miler practice run up Mt. Lemmon!
Mike and Darien are hiking on Tuesdays... adding a bit each week...
The cycling is now all 4am departures!! Monday long, Wednesday up Mt. Lemmon, and Saturday with the DooDahs...after a bit of a warmup ride.
Sort of a staid schedule, but it serves...
....March 24, 1999... year flying by...
The projects are flowing... February Cascabel had Darien and Jane working away on the toilet area, with Michael and I adding to the cordwood walls. The well went in a few weeks ago, and our last workday saw Diana and Nina helping us. We started on our pump installation (?!!) and put in the solar hot water heater. Here at the compound we are in full remodel mode and looking at a realignment of new ownerships. Michael's grotto progresses as do the tunnels. B unit gets a new closet. My training still off (sick?) but Dariens is running away. Good year.
July 20, 1999...
...and it all continues. The B and B space at the compound is framed in, and the remodel on B unit is complete. We are going through and adding metal clad roof coverings throughout the property (all this rain!!)
Cascabel is off this month, but we are finally getting our electrical hook ups for the first "for sale" strawbale house. We have trenched in all of the water systems throughout the entire property and dug the septic tanks. The log cabin is taking on it's semi-final form. Jill has joined us in the work out there and at the compound. This fall should be fun with some real living spaces taking shape.
Michael and I ventured over to Silver City and picked up a great wood burning cookstove... hot bread next trip out!
...and, speaking of hot bread, the compound gets a huge, commercial Wolf four burner with a 48" griddle and two hug baking ovens!! It comes as soon as we modify the floor of the outdoor kitchen to accomodate it!
Darien has been out with a knee injury, but should be back training soon. We are looking at the Tubac Desert Challenge again this year... time will tell.
April 10, 2000.... where does the time go!!
1999 was all about infrastructure. We put in well and waterlines, roads, electricity, building site pads, storage buildings, and numerous equipment support. We organized the lots and decided on the applications and locations of our buildings. Jill moved out. Michael's began their home sites.
now, we are beginning the first sleeping cabin even as we complete the accent work on the hobbit house kitchen. We plan to be living out there within two years, keeping in town apartments at the LaEscuela compound.
Mercedez, 1964 gmc 10 ton truck, golf cart, diesal f250, trailer, and lots of wheelbarrows!!
Spring 2001... ...been awhile... now I'm out here at Cascabel with a small trailer office and new computer system... working away. Building permits to work on my site and doing odds and ends on the common area. Lots of trees planted... Gators are the new vehicles of choice!
07/17/01
...been out off and on for the last month. Tucson business stuff keeps getting in the way, but may have finally concluded most of that today. Darien dropped me off with a load of supplies, mostly t/g 2x6 from Gerson's... third trip out in a rental U-Haul. Makes for an easy trip and good loads, but a bit costly. I'm focusing on getting the roof framed and decked at my site, then I'll switch over and finish the sleeping cabin in September. We picked up two Gators to supplement the work, and they do help. Also, the allow us to keep the regular traffic out of the retreat area. That's nice.
07/19/01
...stormy weather continues... pretty nice. Breezes and shade make for comfortable work environment. Good run this morning and a lazy day settling back in... looking forward to getting on track with all of that project work
Times are a changin...
