ApHC Trail Rides

The ApHC sponsors three week-long trail rides in three distinct areas of the country. Each of these rides come complete with catered meals, entertainment and beautiful scenery. These trail rides are just a great way for horse lovers to come together for a week of experiencing the great outdoors and camaraderie.

Below, you will find a brief description of each trail ride.

Apache Land Trail Ride

The 1999 Apache Land Trail Ride is scheduled to take place May 23-29 in the beautiful Cibola National Forest near Gallup, New Mexico. You will be surrounded by majestic pine trees and the picturesque landscape that has made New Mexico the Land of Enchantment. This is a base camp ride which will be located on an old Army radar station. There will be no electricity or water hook-ups, however, water and toilets will be provided. The ApHC provides all meals beginning with dinner on the 23rd and ending with breakfast on the 29th. Horse feed must be provided by the rider. As always, a physician, veterinarian and farrier will be available. You are not required to ride an Appaloosa on this ride. All breeds are welcome to attend. Fees are as follows:
ApHC Members Non-Members
Rider: $275 Rider: $300
Non-Rider: $225 Non-Rider: $225

Deadline for application is May 7, 1999.

Joseph Trail Ride

The Chief Joseph Trail Ride retraces, as closely as possibly, the path the Nez Perce and their Appaloosas took during their flight from the U.S. Cavalry in 1877. The Chief Joseph Trail Ride is the most prestigious trail ride of its type in the U.S. today. The 1999 ride marks the thirty-fifth year and the ninth year of the third time covering the entire trail. The date for this year's ride will be July 25-31. Because of the strict regulations passed down from the US Forest Service, we will not be camping in the park. Rather, we will camp outside the park, and take day trips in a wagon wheel fashion. At this time, we do not know exactly where the camp will be located, however, that information will be available soon. Jim Evans, Trail Guide, is working diligently to find the best spot possible. Regardless of where we will specifically ride, the scenery will be absolutely breathtaking.

Camp will be in one central location this year, so drivers will not be necessary. Only riders and non-riders will participate. This does not mean that the camp location will be able to accomodate 300 campers and trailers. Please be conscientious and share accomodations where possible. The ApHC wishes to maintain our reputation for preserving the environment and land on which we ride and camp. Since, there is no running water or electricity, tenting will still be a convenient option. Fees are as follows:
Adult Rider: $325 Adult Non-Rider/Driver: $275 Youth 12-18: $250

Deadline for application is July 5, 1999.

The Chief Joseph Trail Ride is sponsored in part by Montana Pride.

Daniel Boone (Sheltowee) Trail Ride

Mark your calendars to attend the 1999 Sheltowee Trail Ride, September 26-October 2. Mammoth Cave National Park will be the location for the last ApHC trail ride of the year. The leaves on the trees are making their beautiful color changes to signify that fall has arrived. This is also a base camp ride and the ApHC will provide all meals, water and toilets for your convenience. You may ride the breed of your choice, but you must provide feed for that animal. As on all ApHC rides, a physician, veterinarian and farrier will also be attending the ride. Fees for this ride are as follows:

ApHC Members

Non-Members

Rider: $275 Rider: $300
Non-Rider: $225 Non-Rider: $225

Deadline for application is September 6, 1999.

An official ApHC Trail Ride Application and Release Form must be filled out and a deposit of at least $50 must be paid to secure your spot on any ride. All balances must be paid in full prior to the beginning of each ride. Any horse participating on any of the rides must be in good physical health and must be at least four years of age. Stallions are not permitted on the rides, nor are horses who kick welcome. The ApHC reserves the right to prohibit the use of any animal deemed unsafe. In the case of horses who are rented for purposes of attending any ApHC ride, all requirements still apply and must be met.
