Model Railroading on Rob's Model Railroads

Projects

Current, in-design phase, Eastern Division (formerly Washington Division) of the Southern Railroad, RF&P and W&OD. It will occupy the basement spare room dedicated for this purpose. Unfortunately, I could only squeeze 12'4"x14'8" out of the wife given I have 4 kids and a dog.

I grew up a SRR kid living in Alexandria, near the tracks and Dad a Loco Engineer.

The era is 1969. A small portion of Potomac Yard (Richmond Fredricksburg and Potomac - RF&P)is at the bottom, with its interchange to the Washington and Old Dominion - W&OD. We wind around to the Alexandria station at the foot of the Masonic Temple or George Washington National Masonic Memorial. After this, the interchange with the RF&P and the start of the Southern RR at AF Tower as the Southern yard enters the mainline. At this point the RF&P makes a getaway rising up to crossover the SRR and head south to Woodbridge and Richmond. The SRR's southbound Passenger track sneaks around the horn and links backup with the southbound freight and northbound pass and freight tracks (Hidden under table). We next see the SRR entering Manassas(My current residence) where the Harrisonburg branch line folds off to the west we see the last of the SRR heading south past Bristow Station... (Actually the branch line or weed line connects to the mainline under the table and a single track return loops back to the SRR yard at Alexandria as the Downtown branch line to the waterfront. Sidings on the SRR include the Fruit Growers Express Car Shops, Warehouses, Brick Factory, Manassas Southern States, and a Produce Plant.

Back on the RF&P: After crossing over the SRR at CR tower it passes through Van Dorn, over the Occaquan, through Woodbridge and into Fredricksburg where the Dahlgren branch peels off and then onto Richmond. Sidings on the RF&P include the Cameron Run Army Base, Lowes, Cement Plant and warehouse.

Back on the W&OD: After the interchange at Pot yard the line travels to the waterfront where is dumps coal at the PEPCO plant and parks boxcars at the wharf. In the other direction is travels up and over Pot Yard on to Vienna and a freight depot and station. Then on to Leesburg and its Rock Plant, Coal xfer, small engine facility, and shops with a turntable and station.

Operation:

The SRR is a Class 1 Mainline railroad moving through traffic and locals servicing customers. The locals are usually sent out of Alexandria Yard and through Freights from Pot Yard.

The RF&P is a Class 1 bridge line connecting the CSX affiliates to the south of Richmond with Penn and D&H and other northern RR. Its main yards (Pot Yard in Alexandria and Accua in Richmond) service engines and classify trains going north and south.

The W&OD is a dying branch line trying to stay alive. It transports goods to the west and receives rock, coal and lumber for transport on ships and barges in Alexandria and interchange with RF&P.
