History

Raleigh International aims to be pre-eminent at developing young people through demanding environmental and community projects worldwide.

The initial inspiration for Raleigh came from HRH the Prince of Wales, who, with Colonel John Blashford-Snell, felt there was a need for youth to be stimulated by constructive and realistic challenge. Operation was set up in 1984 to carry out the work started by Operation Drake in 1978. Intially, a four year project, it became so successful that in 1988 Operation Raleigh became a permanent organisation. Raleigh's commitment to conservation and community projects overseas has strengthened, and emphasis has been placed on creating a truly international youth development programme. In January 1992, the organisation's name was change to Raleigh International to reflect the new aims and dirrection of the charity. No longer sailing around the world carrying out projects en route, all expeditions are now land based. A Major part of Raleigh International experience is developing international understanding. Young people from all over the world are encouraged to work together, learning from each other, exchanging skills and ideas.
